I'm thinking of stripping the paint from my Cup wheels and having them polished so they shine. But not too sure of how they will look and if I will like them. I don't want to do all that only to find I hate the look afterwards.

So, does anyone have a red 928 with Cup wheels that have been stripped and polished? If you do, can you please submit pictures? I'd like to kinda get an idae of what my Shark would look like. Here is a picture of my car as it looks presently.

Don't polish them....get them chromed...polished wheels are WAY to much work to maintain...ask me how I know on my flatdish rims!

I'm just toying with the idea right now, it's not a definite. But I want to see if I would like it. Don't get me wrong, I like it the way it is, but maybe the different looking wheel will make the car shine more. As it is, it looks pretty sedate, with the tinted glass and sounds good with the RMB. But I want the car to look more aggressive without getting into the flared fenders, wider wheels, and lowering too much. Get the idea?

Aluminum is a metal which never occurs in nature it is always combined with other things you can find gold nuggets but never aluminum nuggets. That desire to be parts of other things means bare aluminum want to immediately start corroding combining and it happens quickly.

I still have a set of polished dish wheels (why, I don't know) from my 82. I would treat them with some Never-Dull once or twice a year and they looked great! That said, I think chrome or some of the newer powder coats would hold up much better and probably cost about the same on those wheels.

I agree, plus no matter how much you polish them, they still look like dull chrome I like your car the way it is

I didn't have them polished a PO did at some point before...but it was a 1/2 *** job since the inside edges are not polished...so its a combo of old anodize with quickly oxidizing polished aluminum on the rest....

I've heard lots of horror stories on chroming wheels - things like hydrogen embrittlement and porous openings causing loss of air. Has anyone here had a set of wheel sucessfully chromed that lasted the test of time?

I have a set that the PO had plated (but with gold, not chrome) which were totally screwed up. But that may be an isolated case.

The issue with chrome wheels is that the chrome doesn't seem to hold up at the rim and can flke off - not sure the cause, but it does, I once had a set on another vehicle. When this happens the tire bead does not seal and the result is a rim leak. It's a slow leak that makes you put air in the tire every few days to a week - and it's not fixable.

2 years on chromed cups, and still going strong. Whoever does chroming for TireRack SUCKS. Take a look at this wheel, was new in the box(and was sent right back):



The set I have now were chromed by these guys: http://www.calchrome.com Far superior work, and they are holding up fine so far, but I don't expect them to last forever.

I have chrome. That's the closest to polish as you can get, if not too blingy

The flats look good polished because they're forged and the alloy is more dense. The cast wheels don't polish up as nice and don't stay looking nice because there are more porous. Nee, I love the look of your car the way it is. Cup 1s are the best looking wheel on a 928 IMHO
