Unhappy UPDATE 1 1/2 yrs later.

just picked up the 81 from Porsche, got an alighnment and wheel bal, got on the highway and just as the car upshifted got a real bad vibration BAD!!! let off on the gas and it smoothed out then rattled and then started up again when i added just a bit of gas.... got of the highway pronto and praying all the way home.. would rattle then vibrate off the line...but was smooth at crusing speed..
tried reving in neutral... vibrates..no rattles.. the rattle comes from what seems like the pass, floorpan.
History. ???milage
has odd "cha-cloo" sound when comming of the revs
shifts little hard up and down.

SO dos this sound like the dredfull TQtube failure????
Motor mounts?...trans mounts?
Nephues looking to drive the car alot in 2 weeks(when hes on leave from Iraq)

Did you have this issue before dropping the car off at the shop?

Is it possible that one of both of the motor mouts broke and the engine is loose, maybe perhaps even sititng on the cross brace?

Both of my motor mounts are bad, but it doesn't do that.

Sounds more like a loose plug wire or some other ignition problem.

Did the mechs do any other 'checkups'?

let me mention some things here he failed to... the alignment was done at the local Porsche dealer... all the other work was not. this is my car, I am currently in Iraq, and I am reeeeeaaaallly getting worried what this may be. I have invested 5k into suspension and brakes in the past few months, and one of the things I was looking forward to the most in 10 days when I come home on leave, was driving my baby. I cant afford to get anything more than maybe 2k of work done before I come home, or it'll leave me with no chits to spend when I get home. I am very quickly becoming crestfallen here, and I too am praying it is the MM. please, I beg you 928 gurus, lead me to the light. 9 days and counting to get this issue fixed, or I wont have a porsche to drive when I get home ( shouldnt everyone have a Porsche to drive?)

Kinda sounds like it might be a fragged cat or maybe a rattling heat shield...

Does the steering wheel vibrate or shake? Is it worse at idle than at, say, 2000 rpm?

Look under the car and see if there are any new marks on the torque tube. Maybe the shop somehow lifted the car at the TT and bent it.

How to check for the engine monts, you can either get an engine hoist and try to lift it, then see if the mounts will seperate. OR you can use a 2X4 and try to lift the engine from the mottom of the oil pan with a regular jack. This method can put extra pessure on the pan gasket so if yo can get an engine hoist use that.

Is the vibration speed related, rpm related or both (certain rpms at a certain speed)? As Porken pointed out, if there is power loss it could be as simpel as a loose plug wire.

im not talking about just a vibration but a vibration sound thats loud and a large vibration you can feel. at around 2000rpm ..and is rpm related not speed. rpm response is same..the clatter sound is heatsheild like but sounds like thicker metal.

When you say, "vibration," does the steering wheel shake in your hand? Or does the car track true and straight with a vibration elsewhere in the car...?

Is this an auto or 5 speed? If auto the TT spins when revved in park. ( don't know about a 5 speed)Have someone rev it in park (MAKE SURE ITS IN PARK ONLY!!!) and lie down if you don't have a way of lifting it and see if you can get a finger on the tube to feel for the vibration.

You have to narrow it down by feel. Then when you feel where its happening you can figure out what it is exactly.
