I searched and did not find.

I changed the oil yesterday, with new filter... I have added 6.5 quarts of Mobil-1 to the car and run the engine... the ol level on the dipstick is just over the first ticky mark.

Can these things really need 7+ quarts? There's none on the floor....

Thad, you're kidding, right? , as they say. It's in the owner's manual under filling capacities, near the end. Mine states "Approx. 2 U.S. gals." You're getting spurious readings on the dipstick. Sometimes oil dripping down on the stick can do this. Give it several minutes to settle. Pull & wipe the stick, reinsert and pull to take the reading. Don't run the car 2 quarts low. I drop 8 qts in before I take any readings.

Yup, the guys down at the oil change place on the corner started scratching their heads after 6 quarts and not seeing the fill line yet. It was 8.5 before she finally filled up.

Thaddeus..What viscosity oil did you replace with....correct me fellow rennlisters if I'm wrong here, but it is very important you use the recommended viscosity..ie 10w40/50below 5 degrees F.....20w40/50 above 5 degrees F

I once had an MB 6.9 that took 13 quarts of oil. Rather than do it at home, I took it to Jiffy Lube. They did it fine the first time and it was a bargain cost-wise. The second time, the boys didn't notice it was a dry sump system. They didn't drain the tank, only the block. Dumped in 13 quarts. Then they started the car up and blew every oil seal and hose on the car. I think the bill for the repair was $6000.

My 86.5...took over 8 qts. (close to 8 1/2), of 20W-50 Valvoline Syn power at the last oil change. I used a Mahle oil filter. I had been using the Amsoil Series 2000 20W-50 synthetic prior to this last oil change, but my local Amsoil ditributor was out of town so it got loaded with the Valvoline Syn Power this time. I do prefer the Amsoil, anybody thats visited their website can attest that they make a great product. Worth the premium over the regular synthetics like Mobil 1, Syntec, and the others in my opinion. But...all these oils far exceed the manufacturers specification for lubricating oil. And...due to the increased sump capacity of the 928, and external oil cooler incorporated into the system...Oil change intervals can be dramatically extended if a high grade synthetic oil is selected.

Greg at Precision says the way he remembers it is the 928 stands for 9= Qts. oil 2= doors 8=Cylinders I thought that was pretty funny but then again I have a warped sense of humor.

Mine seems to like 9 qts after an oil change to be full?

With that big ole' filter mine holds a tad over 9 quarts.

Do you fill up the filter before putting it in? I am pretty sure that you've gotta run the engine to get the filter full and the air out..

Even without modern high quality synthetics, the factory spec is 1 year or 12,000 miles, IIRC. The filter will need to be changed before the oil with synthetic.

I always fill the filter at least 3/4 full, before spinning it on the block. Then put 7 qts in the pan, and spin it over with the fuel pump fuse pulled. Once oil pressure is evident. I give it 5 minutes to drain back to the pan, and recheck the dipstick. Repeat as necessary till full to the mark. Is there a error with this ?? Been doing it now for many, many years...
