Default Replacing ignition wires on an S4 (How not to)

That's right. Read it and weap. 4 hours and just putting stuff back together. 944's, VW's, Fords, Volvos, nothing compares to the mess of getting these things replaced as a first timer.

The old, cracked, brittle and shattering covering from the BERU wires went everywhere but in the belt covers. Lost a washer from the guide plate that runs across the front of the engine that I need to find and I think that I may have two wires reversed.

I'll post pics when I get it wrapped, clipped up.

It is a PITA, especially if you try to route them exactly like the factory. I think they built the motor around the spark plug wires.

Does anyone know the difference between the wires for '86 and '89? Can I use an '86 wire set on an '89?

89' and later coil wires are different than earlier coils. We have sets of both in Magnecore 8.5mm available cheap if you need to convert. If you use S4 wires on an 85'/86', they will be a bit long but that's much better than being short...with factory routing the 85/6' wires will be short on an 89'.

I think the easiest way is to re-route them the best way you think fit.

Ross, you are wise beyond your years. Most people probably do that. I actually tried to make them go exactly as original, finnagling them under the coolant inlet and other obtructions.

Thanks Dave, that is the information I needed. So a good deal on '86 wires for my '89, isn't such a good deal.

I just found on mine two places where the wires were in contact with metal - I re-routed them best I could so they didn't directly contact any ground. Something to watch out for.

Yippie, that was a total of 6 hours for the newbie! Steve, thanks for the offers to help.

Turns out I got all the wires right after looking at the WMS. I even got them back in the "original" places. Only thing that changed was that I removed the Beru wire fasteners from the head. No they are not for sale

Well I figured I would want to save time if I ever had to re-tension my power steering belt.

Hey, Ross, you don't need to bring that up. I'd forgotten all about it.

Just about to do this..so can I remove the lift hook on the front of the engine without problems? Can't see how to reach the nuts on the back of the hook otherwise..

It only took me an hour to do mine.. even including installing the old connectors on the new economy kit wires...

I thought it was easier than an oil change...
