If I rev my engine to about 4k and then let out the clutch...I not only get "wheel-hop" but I get all sorts of smoke!
-Launch at 2500 rpm...different story. It hooks up and GOES. Lately I am running gummy Falken tires with a treadwear of 200; the difference between these and the previous hard Yoko's is amazing!
IRS [Independent Rear Suspension] cars like ours aren't the best bet at the drag strip. Beam axle cars always hook up better! Our cars are better 99% of the time though.

When I first bought the car it had crappo who-knows-how-old tires on it, and I was able to get a couple of nice long smokey burnouts without any wheel hop. But, with those tires or any other, when it breaks loose in the rain I get wheel hop most of the time. Go figure. Maybe the difference is in the way the suspension flexes as it forces the car to accelerate. If it's not loaded, the geometry is out of whack enough that there is more tendency to hop.

Digging up this thread as lately, the GTS has been wheel hopping like a rabbit.
Never got this before???
Up to now, stomping the accelerator at 2500rpm or more, the wheels would just spin smoothly all the way to redline.
Maybe my PS2's are now worn down a little and are really starting to have "traction'???
Thoughts??

Chuck, you never put your foot into it enough to get any wheel spin. What you are feeling are the pebbles on the road.

On a serious note, I've had it do both on mine. I think the tires, surface, technique, etc., all play a role in determining the outcome.

The GT hops a little, (less on 17" PS2's than on 16" Avons), but the GTS just spins no matter what tires are on it.

From a dead stop, mine hops- but from a roll, spins with no hop. Son's Z06 hops madly on drag strip, but not on the street... Hop is usually caused by a harmonic frequency coinciding with a wrap/unwrap of the drivetrain- later Corvettes had different diameter axles on each side to combat this, with fairly good effect. For us, thats not an option until someone makes an axle with slightly larger diameter...
Autos don't have as much problem because the torque converter acts as a damper between the tires and the engine- the engine is never solidly connected to the tires, so the harmonics are damped out before wheelhop ensues.
