Default where to buy good rebuilt steering rack?

I'm looking to buy a rebuilt steering rack for my '88 S4, and was wondering if anyone could recommend where I could get one?

I bought one from an Autozone about 8 years ago (and rather cheaply). Came with a lifetime warranty.
But places like Griffiths has some nice ones.

I'd stick with the big 3 (Devek, 928 Intl, 928 Specialists) even if they were a bit more. IMO they take some care to make sure you get the right parts and they add a lot of value with the service and advice they provide. I wasn't an owner in the days when you had to either get it from Porsche or search for a vendor who had the part, but I know I wouldn't want to go back to those times so I support the vendors who support me.

Ahhh... You're the one. Someone was asking about racks a week or two ago and I remember someone at the Frenzy talking about their Autozone rack with lifetime warranty, but couldn't remember who it was. Must have been the beer - or maybe it was the flashing lights in my rearview mirror that made me forget!

Got mine through DR at specialists recently. Griffith's actually does the work and drop ships it. Seemed to be really good quality, and yes, the car handles and tracks light years better!!!

Since we are on this subject, there has been talk in the past and by first hand experience that some of the racks on later cars ...I think `1990 on....are high pressure racks wth high pressure seals. Supposedly you should replace a GTS rack with a GTS rack for example. The rebuilt racks you get are anyones guess (and probably aren't) as to whether it will work properly with your MY car. When I purchased a rebuilt rack for the GTS, after installation, it was a bit tough to turn. I was forewarned of this and took the chance. The option would have been to have the original rack rebuilt which would have cost more and taken much longer. After the install I was bummed and figured I would try some additives. I had heard of the LUCAS Power steering additive and grabbed a bottle of that. YOWZA, the stuffed worked like a charm! Steering was/IS/HAS BEEN back to normal ever since.

I just thought I would throw this onto the thread incase the issue ever comes up for someone..

I'd consider upgrading to a 91 and later steering rack (and pump) to provide more power assist. Particularly when upgrading wheels, this comes in very handy, as parking is still realatively easy, while higher speed precision is a hint better.

When my steering rack leaked, we first put in a regular ZF model - they claimed they were all the same for all model years, so we thought they probably upgraded all to 91+ standard. Not true.

Then I ordered an original Porsche rebuilt rack, and my steering is not the way it should be.

Keith,
When I talked to Griffith's, (Charlie) he said that all the racks they build are the same. Only difference is the stops on the ends of the racks themselves (OB to later model change, did not ask what year, assuming 86.5). Other companies could be different (seals etc.) I don't know.

Nicole, I have the rebuilt rac by Griffith's, I also have an HO p. steering pump (also from Griffith's) that is 100bar just like the 91 and ups. No problems with this system, all my hoses are brand new, steering resv. is new as well. Steering is a lot nicer at parking lot speeds. (Seems a little light at speed, only around sweepers, but that could be a function of the non-spoilered ob's having some air under the car at 100ish. I will lower to bottom of normal range when I get new springs and shocks and see what that does to it.

Overall, pretty happy with the products I have on my 79 from Griffith's.

Nicole is right. I have driven her car with earlier and then a 91+ rack. You could tell the difference in parking maneuvers. Charlie, bless his soul, is just spouting what has been accepted. Since there is no dimensional difference between the racks after 85, they are considered interchangeable. The PET shows a new PN for 91+ and the 91 MY technical srevice booklet discusses the changes to the rack as well as the pump.
