Hey Guys-looking to add a 928 and looking at the 1983-1986 cars realistically, what is the real world difference in driving the 234hp 16v cars vs the 288hp 32v cars. This will not be a track car (have the 911 for that), and please dont say 54hp that much I figured out. Also is the much diff in maintenance, I am mostly a diy type. Thanks Jim.

Go look at a few, and drive them both... See for yourself.. The 32V will scream VS the 16V.. You might also be able to get a 16V euro with 300hp...
If you stepped into a 32V S4/GT/GTS, you'd really see a difference...
HTH,

I think the euro 16V is the way to go with its, ahheeemmmm, 310 hp it is just a very smooth motor. Power just keeps increasing and it revs like crazy. Sounds great with a good exhaust, but you really can't go wrong with any well cared for 928.
Condition is the most important factor.

i agree that condition is most important but having said that the later 32v cars have better suspension, brakes and more tourque in the lower rev range. a GT is a very nice car but also the 86.5 is a nice find, or the 86 euro.

If you are looking at power as the main consideration, not styling, etc, then get an s4, unless you can find a Euro S with 300 or 310 horsepower. Or an 86.5, for the best of both worlds...

The 16V engines, when done correctly with exhaust and headers, sound very very angry. Th Euro cars more so. Angry and a bit crazy in the head.
The 32V motors are, well, more civilized, even when unmuffled. Yes, they do scream, but its a purposeful scream, with intent.
The 16V is just like a rabid dog - no direction or thinking - just angry movement.

I like having two 16V's, one a track car the other supercharged, for less than a nice 32V sells for

A chipped '85-'86 32V is faster than a chipped S4!!!
I had both a US 16V and the current '85 32V and the seat-of-the-pants power difference is alot.

There is only one way to settle this!

I have Sniper's car and my times listed here, also some other 928 owners have their times listed too. The selection is very small. http://www.dragtimes.com/Porsche--928-Drag-Racing.html

Heinrich,
LOL You know there isn't a simple yes or no answer for this.
In all honesty, my first post was supposed to be sarcastics comment. It's hard to bring that across in writing.
Then again I do belive that a chipped 85-86 32V could and MOST LIKELY be faster than a chipped S4.
Any potential new owner should just test drive these cars and make up their own decision.
