Imo, are you serious? You think that 51% of all 85/6 cars woud be faster than S4's? Have you looked at S4 drag slips and 85/6 slips? Show me ONE other 85/6 that can come within two seconds of your time. An average S4 will do 13.9.

Erich all I'm sayin ..... I have two rocket ships and till very recently used to own 4 .... for a long long time. And what do I elect to drive? The dead dog. Even though it's a lot slower it does make a good 70 more chp and hit 0-60 a good 2 seconds faster and the quarter a good 2 seconds faster than ....... all my faster cars

Factory specs state 14.2 to 14.5 so I seriously doubt an average S4 will do 13.9
Would an above average S4 do 13.5's?

Taking a look at the factory specs and

85-86 S - 5-man (US) 5.0L-32v M28/43 288 302 10.10:1 LH-Jetronic 155 6.3
14.2 3351

The 85 - 86 boast the same numbers as the S4 and is in fact 3/10 faster than some S4's in the 1/4 mile.
200 lbs makes a lot of difference.

Be wary of car salesmen

Considering all the 928 gatherings there are, this kind of thing should not even be a debate.
People need to set up some imprompteau races at these events.
Swap drivers even.
Auto vs Auto.
Pedal to the floor.
See which year 928s are faster than the others.
Trade cars people!
People are never objective about their personal rocket ships.

I'm gonna pop in with some 16v experience - I've never driven a 32v car. I have an 84 S, in my opinion the worst year 928, because up to 82 or 83 the engines were non-interference design (less complicated), and 85 onward they went to 32v and a whole lot more power. But don't get me wrong, even the 84, which is a hassle to repair sometimes, and one of the slower models, is STILL A BLAST TO DRIVE!

Just my advice, if you like DIY and you plan on spending a good amount of time wrenching, try an older model. Even like 78 or 79, with the CIS fuel injection, which is near bullet proof. A classic german muscle car. If you want more modern styling and power, and don't mind complication, go for a 85 or later model. All years have the same interior. Don't settle on an automatic, unless that's what you want. I hate the stupid 928 auto tranny (a mercedes unit). It starts in 2nd gear, breaks easily, and is HEAVY!
