I've never been a fan of those particular Benzos.

Amg worked on cars are tag Amg, especially the engine, that’s
their calling card, a true Amg engine would have there logo on the valve
covers or the air cleaner. I would buy the 500E, you can always find a
928.

So when did this moronic practice start?

After thinking about it for one second, I would take my 928 over my MB for sure.

That's a very nice E500. I guess it depends on what you are looking for in a car. Do you want a GT or do you want a sedan? The E500 is a very practical car and is more suited for taller drivers but the parts tend to be ungodly expensive and the wiring harness tend to self destruct as pointed out earlier. The S4 will be much easier to modify and there is much more support and parts availability for the S4. The S4 is also much better looking.

If you want a really quick 4 door for not a lot of money, get a 1999-2000 210 E55. It will be the pants off the E500 in a straight line and in just about every aspect of performance. IMHO, the E55 looks much nicer and is very reliable with the exception of the MAF's and window regulators but both are quick and easy fixes. Not to mention, there are great aftermarket tuning options, with the E55, that will get you a car every bit as quick as a new viper or 996 tt for a fration of the cost. You won't get that with a 124 E500.

I say there really is no choice but to get both if you have the money. However, if I had to choose between the two and didn't need four doors, I'd recommend the S4.

I don't think the E500 and the 928 are as much of an apples and oranges comparison as some might think. The additional torque that the MB engine has over a 928 S4 makes up for the weight penalty, so both feel remarkably similar when accelerating. An E500 with a stock suspension has a more supple ride over a 928, but it doesn't by any means feel mushy or give a sense that the car will feel loose at speed. Porsche tuned the suspension on the MB, and although the E500 did get a bit softer springs and shocks than those of the '92-'93 500E cars, the ride is very controlled. I'd suspect that the H&R springs on the car you're looking at would firm up the suspension to at least the level of the earlier cars. I put Eibachs on my 190E 2.6, and that brought the ride on par with a 2.3-16 or Sportline model, so the H&Rs would give similar results.

I think the bottom line is that the E500 is a 928 with four doors. Both of mine have had similar reliability, which has been quite satisfactory overall. The 928 has occasional relay issues, and the E500 has had the wiring harness/ETA problem, but otherwise both have been great cars to own and an absolute blast to drive. As many have mentioned, the E500 will be harder to find than a 928 S4, so if this particular car looks good, you may want to grab it while you can. I always have a concern about the longevity of the transmissions on the E500 after 120Kmi because I think you're living on borrowed time by that point; the automatic 928s don't seem to have transmission issues per se, although they have the dreaded TBF - thrust bearing failure. A 5-speed in a 928 will be basically bullet proof.

My $.02 - and I get to drive both whenever I want.

Jim
