928 Vs. Jaguar XKR
I don't mean any disrespcet to the Porche faithful but I would like to know if anyone has any comparison experiences between a Jag XKR and the 928, the GTS in particular. They appear similar on paper. Price for an 00-02 XKR is about the same for a GTS in good condition. Investment potential seems much better for the GTS, though that's not my primary consideration.
I thought I was heading straight for a 928 until my wife piped up yesterday with, "What about a Jag XK, I like their look." I don't need her approval but I do want her involvement in my decision. I don't want my car to become a competitor for her attention, or at least for her to percieve it that way. I'd prefer for her to want to ride in it, as often as possible. So I'd like to put the XKR to death in a logical and thoughtful way.

They are very different cars and tricky to compare.
The XKR rides much better than a GTS and is quieter - I'd choose it for long journey's. It also feels a lot torquier.
GTS noisy and bumpy and shows it's seventies roots, but much better body control on the twisty stuff.
Room can be a problem in the XKR - it starts getting tight if you are over 6 foot. Seats not as good either.
Long term investment? GTS every time.
My choice? GTS naturally!
Good luck - both are good cars.

Hello.
Myself beeing both a Jaguar enthusiast and a 928 enthusiast, owner of a 928 and a XJ6, I consider myself to have a valid vote in this discussion.
The XKR is a great car at really great value. But then again, so is the GTS. I think a newer XKR would be preferred in our household, just because I think it will give less headache.
Among the many things these two cars have in common, their prices drop fast.
Why not opt for the XKR for Your wife and a S4 for Yourself?
Either way You go, I'm sure that You will be satisfied.

Maintenance is a big factor. You can probably still get the XKR serviced at a dealer, but few P-car dealers will touch the GTS unless they can stick it to you - and they will. Parts, I'm guessing, are cheaper for the XKR, but GTS parts can get very expensive. With that said, if you can, and have a desire to wrench on your own car, you can offset the cost of the parts with your labor, and probably come out on top vs. the XKR and dealer service.
I'm sorry I cannot give you performance data or objective comparison on the handling and roadworthiness of the 2 vehicles, except to suggest you go and drive both - lots!.
Let's not forget that the support network for the GTS is far greater than for the Jags. I used to own a '66 E-type roadster. It was a nice car, but I found the majority of other Jag owners to be a bit snooty. Something that turned me off. On the contrary, the 928 crowd is really a super crowd willing to take time to teach others about how great these cars are. This group doesn't generally concern itself with status symbols, or one-up-manship... sorry, there is a bit of a HP race going on, but that's not always a bad thing. The vast majority of us fell in love with the 928 at an earlier point in our lives and can now afford one. We are truly living our dream, and are always more than happy to share some of the magic we feel every time we get into our cars.
A wise man once said,
"There is just something about driving a 928 which just makes you smile ...and you either get it or you do not. I feel sorry for those who do not." - J.B.
I got it the 1st time I drove my 1st 928. If you don't... buy the XKR and enjoy.

"She'll take over the jaguar, that alone is enough for me to nod to the 928"
I have the antidode. I agreed to buy her a new Lexus RX330 (she's in a chevy blazer now). That should keep too much perfume from rubbing off on my steering wheel.
Not only that but I have to buy a new truck this year as well becuase she doesn't like the crash safety rating on my 00 F150. So basically I've got to spend about 85k before I get to the 928.

I feel ya. I was standing on the roof of a home I was building for my stock broker in 94 when a burgandy 928 slowly drove by. The driver was eyeing the home while I was eyeing his car. The low rumble was sweet. He made one more slow pass, pulled out onto the main drag and took off. That God's eye image and sound have stuck with me all these years.
That same stock broker let me drive his new boxter when it first came out. He had to drive accross 3 states to get it. Nice car but it didn't seem to have much power. I paid for that car, he got to drive it. Anyone in the market in 00-01 knows what I mean.
Thanks for your perspective.

With regards to the interior space issue as noted by Drmark, I'll add that while I've not driven an XKR, I have sat in one, and the interior is definitely more...oh, let's say cozy...than a 928. So, perhaps the appeal for the 928 could be made on grounds of improved utility?

Your answer is clear, you have a dream?.....Do it!!!
Don't get the 928 and regret it. Best car I have ever driven.
It is like driving a "time capsule", a "space pod", a "magic carpet", you get the picture.
ps; The truck can wait...

Since the XKR was launched three years after the 928 ceased production it seems a slightly unfair comparision. Are they really comparible in terms of purchase price? If so the XKR must have suffered quite astrounding depreciation. Then again, the 1996 price in the UK for an XK8 is less than the original cost of my 87 S4, and the 1998 XKR was only 20% more, despite the supercharger adding 80 bhp to the XK8's 290bhp.
What do I know, I've never even sat in one...
