Default Keys made by Locksmith

Hi Rennlist,

I got a set of keys made... they work nice... I live in San Jose CA.

His business name Schwenk Lock and Safe. He charged $36 each. Anyone had it done cheaper?

(408)-978-0403

I told him if it worked I would tell the list...

This guy was able to make the keys no problem. but he did not have any real porsche blanks. Supposedly Porsche does not sell blanks. Is this true? Any sources out there.

Also I have heard that Porsche NA cannot make the keys very well and that many have reported problems getting them to make a key properly. A dealer told me that they would have to charge even if not it did not work. But they actually backed off from that and said that they would not charge if it did not work.

Also anyone tried changing the keyhead??? to maybe a lighted one... my original keykead must have broke off at some point... Could I just replace it?

Loren,
do a search for Tony Euganeo, he's a former Porsche key cutter and has all the blanks, heads etc you could want...

You can get Porsche blanks on ebay that will fit the lighted keyhead and have them cut by your guy. The Silca blanks will not take the Porsche keyhead easily (maybe with some cutting and grinding?)

I have gotten keys made by keys4classics using an emailed high-res digital photo, they work great and it was pretty easy.

Loren: Did he do this as a copy from another key you had?

There is a guy in Australia (via eBay) that makes them from a photo. According to him, there are a set number of cut shapes/patterns and he can deduce that (key code) from a photo. Many people have had keys made by him from a photo and they worked fine. That must be the fella Joel is talking about. I got some from him that did not work so well and clearly had a different tip taper than my factory original keys. I managed to reshape the tip and it worked better but not as smoothly as my original keys.

Others have reported that key copies like you got often still needed some filing to work properly. So, the locksmiths want to have the car there to make sure the key works and make adjustments. That was George Suennen's experience with a locksmith in Alameda. Porsche makes them from a key code and they often do not work well. They made need some tuning with a file.

Tony Euganeo is the guy.

Tony's web site is http://www.lockandkeyid.com/

Tony did my spare keys and I was impressed at the amount of hand fileing he did before trying them in my car. They worked perfectly.

Default Hey Bill I want an x pipe now too....

Morning Bill,

Yes he copied from my original keys. My original was a bit worn but as you mention the cut depths are pretty much a standard. I think that he has all of the tooling to do it right... the keys work very nicely.

My car has two keys... is that right... How many do you all have...

One works for the ignition, door and gas cap. the other works for the hatch...maybe the hatch lock was replaced at somepoint?

Also I think he can rekey the locks too... maybe I should have had him rekey the rear hatch.

This guy was recommended by the Stevens Creek Porsche.. they said they did not trust the Porsche of north america keys and refer all clients to this guy... Mr Schwenk. His business it to make tool for locksmiths... but does locksmith work too... He showed me the tumblers in some locks... seem like voodoo to me...

Bill, I read that post on the twinscrew thread... I want the devek pipe now too...

Keys for classics is the way to go - fast and a good price. I have had about 8 keys made by them and they all fit perfectly.
I would like blanks that would accept the right keyhead.

Hi Earl,

Thanks for the tip... I may call this guy to get some blanks and have the locksmith rekey my rear hatch and cut another...

I just picked them up and they worked... they look a lot sharper than my old worn out keys... I did not have to have them filed or anything!

with you supplier and this locksmith I think that the bay area listers have a winning combo...

Thanks,

LO

Loren, Lockworld in San Francisco will be happy to re-key your hatch lock while you wait. Just drive up, park on the street, pull the hatch cylinder, and bring it in. If you want them to do ALL the work they may fuss a bit about timing, asking you to make an appointment, wait a bit longer, etc. Also they have the lighted keyheads AND the correct blank to go in the lighted keyhead with the miniature gold p-crest. Definitely not the cheapest way to go, ~$60 IIRC for one key and ~$50 to re-key the lock.

I had a key cut/supplied by factory (through a dealer) from the VIN number , and it was fine, and fitted the lighted key head. Took several weeks to come through, was $40 IIRC...

Note that the ~$60 key was a new steel blank and new lighted head, purchased together.

I think that the main reason why the freshly cut keys (made from a code or picture) do not work as smoothly as some of you hope is that the lock itself (the tumblers, etc.) tends to wear down over time just as the key does.

So a fresh key in a worn lock is going to need some modification because of the lock, not the locksmith.

Can a locksmith rekey if I lost my original? I've been looking all over for my spare key but can't find it and I'm just looking for other options. Hope you can help, thanks!

BTW, I have a Toyota Prius 2008. It has an FOB. Will this be a problem?
