Default Does anyone else need front tweeter brackets?

Having failed to procure a defunct front tweeter from a 10-speaker system, I'm going to get a couple of brackets machined out of aluminum. Each will fit in the stock hole, and an MB Quart tweeter will fit neatly into it at the appropriate angle (shooting forward).

There are economies of scale involved; if anyone thinks they'll want a pair, please let me know and I'll plan accordingly.

I don't need any at this time, but I like your choice of tweeter!

Brendan,

I'll post a pic later, or a drawing, but here's more of a description:

On a 10-speaker system (at least -- I don't know about other 928 stereos) when you remove the speaker grille from the door tweeter you see a black plastic ring, 3.5 inches in diameter, with four screw holes, surrounding the tweeter driver itself.

The part is marked with part number 8 605 260 356. One screw hole is marked "OL" (for Oben Links, or top-left); another is marked "OR". When the tweeter is installed in the left door with the "OL" screwhole topmost, the tweeter fires at an angle about 30º forward of parallel to the door.

The tweeter unsnaps from the black plastic ring, which I'm calling the bracket. If you take the Porsche driver out, the MB Quart tweeter driver will fit in the hole (with a little room to spare). If you have a pair of the stock brackets in decent condition and a pair of MB Quart tweeters, you can install the tweeters in the brackets with a touch of epoxy and have a stock-looking install. That was my plan.

If, however, you somehow manage to lose a bracket (along with one of your expensive MB Quart tweeters), you will want to fabricate a replacement. Also, if one of your brackets is badly broken (the screwholes typically break) you will want a replacement that maintains the speaker alignment and allows you to use your stock grille. Finally, if you want to replace the underbuilt original bracket with one that will last forever, you will probably want the replacement made of metal.

That's what I'm going to make. It'll fit correctly into the door and be built better than the original part. With the grille on nobody will ever know it's not the original part.

I am thinking of making an oval plate (custom colored) that will fit over both speaker locations, allowing more depth for a larger midrange and the smaller tweeter. I will use the same material to replace my center console removable side pieces and the removable cover in the door panal.
Thinking fiberglass or carbon fiber. Any suggestions?

The MBs in my 89 were kind of Taken apart and look to be glued together to fit whatever the size of the hole is.

Woody,

I'm interested in solutions that maintain stock appearance. If someone made replacement center console side panels (out of fiberglass, CF, or mmmmmm aluminum) to which carpet could be attached, I'd buy a pair.

Mark,
My bodyshop guys first thought was to cover the fiberglass panel with the original carpet. I plan on pulling the original carpet off of the fiberboard insert, tracing the insert on fiberglass, cutting it out and drilling the mounting holes. Depending on how difficult this is, I may be able to make multiple copies. Both sides are identicle, so maybe I can stack up a few and cut them all at once.
I'll keep you posted.

Woody,

On my '89, the console side panels are contoured -- not flat. If it were just a matter of cutting it out, I'd draw a template and have a metal shop cut out a stack of them out of aluminum.

I'd be interested in a set of aluminum side panels if you decide to have some made. Just let me know.

The speaker brackets, right? (Not the imaginary side panels.)

Mark,

Once you determine cost let me know, I may want a few for myself.

All original ones are contured and vary slightly thru out the years (more so with the airbag cars)

If anyone want to make a mold or otherwise make some properly contoured I have brand new ones here that I will loan for that process.

Is there one shape that will fit all years? I'll look into getting a form made.

edit: The cheap solution is probably a buck for vacuum-forming the panel, but the sexy solution is a wooden buck for hammering out a sheet of aluminummmmmm.
