Default Phone Dials on a S4?

I read through some past posts that stated that 16" phone dial wheels will not fit over the brake calipers of a S4. Is that true for phone dials from a mid-80's 944? I've seen ads for phone dials from a 944 with 16x8's in the back and 16x7's in the front. They are described as "deep dish". Will these fit on a S4 shark?

Some people do not have a clue what they are talking about. These are stock S4 brake's under 928 phone dials:

Granted these wheels are 9+ inches wide, that doesn't change the caliper clearance.

That's right, why wouldn't 16" PD's fit an S4??? Porsche made 16" wheels for the 928 all the way up to the GTS which had bigger brakes and needed 17" wheels. The only issue with the PD's is that they never made a wider rim for the 928. However, you just might be able to stuff a 16"x8" made for the 944 under the rear of the S4's. Flat dish were the same as the PD's for a few years until they decided to make the reverse dish for the 87 on later cars.

PD's rule and I have a plan for the ones sitting in my garage. At the very least, they will be widened into 9" or 9.5". Tires have been the only issue as I am having trouble locating anyone who still makes a tire that will fit the 16"x9" rim.

Hacker...who is the manufacturter of that tire? BTW, that car looks mean with those fatties under there!

We tried a set of stock 16 x 7 phone dials on one of our Stock S4's a while back..fit on the hub but scraped on the "porsche" part of the caliper (inside face of the rim and outer part of caliper). Would probably fit with the smooth later brembo's but back when we tried it..it was too close for comfort...and flex of the rim would be devastating.....

later,
Tom

Keith - those are Cooper M+S Z rated tires. How you make a mud & snow z rated tire is beyond me. Anyway, both sizes are available from a few brands from the tire rack. Problem is, the tires on my car (were on my car) ballooned over the wheel more than I would like. In measuring those tires they are wider than other brands of the same "rated" size. I'm switcing to Toyo R1 tires for the track.

I cannot find where I wrote down the exact size of those wheels. Todd Tremel made them a few years ago for the previous owner, took 2 sets of wheels to make the one set. Right now the 17's from my '81 are on the car:

I just realized I miss-typed. My wheels are around 8.25 front and 8.75 rear. Not sure why I thought they were over 9"

In looking at pictures of the phone dial wheels next to the flat dish wheels I can see why there might be a difference in where the wheel clears the caliper. The area between the "holes" of the phone dial and the outer rim is deeply recessed while the flat dish wheel is (duh), flat.

What I don't see is why this seems to be a problem for some S4's and not for others.

Phone dials are soft cast. Flat dishes are forged and IIRC lighter. Skip the PDs.

Fitted 16" phone dials from Brad's car last night on my 89S4.
Cleared the caliper no problem.
Rubbed on the curve of the wheel were the caliper has the raised PORSCHE.
A 1/4" spacer and everything would be great. Brad has ordered the spacers from wheelenhancements $20 each plus S/H.
Yes they do fit.

Rim flex? The PD have been on my car for about 15 years with the Brembo calipers. Countless number of track events and even two stops in the kitty litter (not with me driving, this car has a very colorful history). Not to mention the 3-4 owners after the guy who had the wheels made where not the sharpest tools in the shed. What I'm getting at is, this car went from a dedicated trck car to some bozo's idea of a street rod (speed bumps, pot holes etc...) causing the damage to the fenders seen in my pictures above (now fixed) The wheels are nice and straight - the calipers show no damage. Well, except for the bozo owner took it somwhere that placed the wheel weights in such a way they hit the caliper.

Heinrich, there is a mile of clearance on my car when compared to Jim's:

If they do not rub, you are fine no matter how close it is.
