Default 928s and Child Seats

There are no children on the way (yet) but it occurs to me that if I'm going to drive the shark forever and ever, that I will need options when the time comes to haul the children.

Being the obsessive nut that I am, the Recaro seats are a natural choice. Any advice on installing these in the back seats? Does anyone have experience with this?

It's an easy thing for me to say now while I am not under the gun, so I'll go ahead and say it... I refuse to buy a lesser car simply because I have to haul children in it!

In fact, I believe that the 928 is superior in many respects (in regards to safety, the number one priority) to any sedan on the market.

More important, if my children are going to grow up to be race-car drivers and pilots, they will be leaps and bounds ahead of the competition after a few family trips!

It will be a tight fit. I seem to remember toting my daughter around a couple of times and I always had the fron seat tilted forward so she wasn't so cramped and claustophobic. It should fasten like any other car.

In my exuberance, I took some basic measurements of the back seat area. I agree that the fit will be tight, but since my wife is petit and I am not especially long limbed, I think we should be alright.

Did you find that there was enough room in the hatch for a stroller and baby bag? I looked into Porsche designed accessories to that effect, and they have a very nice collapsible/modular setup designed for the Carrera.

You can get a light stroller that will fold flat. Leave the big stroller at home when you take the P car. I don't think you will have any problems with room. If nothing else, fold one of the rear seats down to make room.

During the last falls Toronto 928 gathering, one of the guys had a child seat in the back of his S4. It was an older model and fit perfectly. I've tried to fit a brand new car seat into my '85, but it does not fit. The base of the car seats sold now days are much wider than some of the older models. If you want one that fits you'll have to buy an older one from someone else. You have to keep in mind that car seats MUST fit perfectly. If they don't why even bother having one. I did a little research and accroding to the Ontario Provincial Police, over 90% of the child seats are installed incorrectly. If you are in dout, go to your local police station and have them look at the seat. I'm sure they will be more than willing to help you out.

I've written extensively about this topic. Should be in archives.

As a car seat tech I would be happy to help you out. I am not familiar with the laws in AZ, but if I can help, I will.

There is something new on the market that I am really excited to try out. Normally there are two big problems: finding a seat narrow enough to go in there, and the fact that there is little leg room, even for small kids and most of the seats on the market pretty much eat that up. Here is someone's new idea:
http://www.onestepahead.com/product/...13766/117.html
It seems to be a harness asssembly of some sort that clips into the existing seat belt.
Since I am really tall and now a daddy of two this might make the difference between the 928s staying and going.

Krarl,

That looks more like a booster seat than a child seat. Nice that it has a 5 point harnes, but the side bolsters are missing.

Heinrich, thanks for the link. After reading it, occured to me that the fellow at the 928 meet also had a COSTCO brand child seat. He was nice enough to offer it to me after he's son out grows it. Thtat will be sometime this spring, perfect timing for the both of us. However, if there is a new seat available on the market that has the latest safety standards, I would rather buy that instead.

IMO,
I think it must be somewhere in between. It says you can start kids in it at 25lbs, which is earlier than most boosters, I think.

Default Britax Roundabout

As an update since I just picket one up and trial fitted it the Britax Roundabout fits really well. http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/CPS/CSSRati...l.cfm?CSSID=25 It sits entirely in the rear seat as both a forward AND a rear facing seat. It doesn't leave much leg room up front as a rear facing seat. Front facing is NO problem at all.

All of the Britax models have the same base but I did notice that some models were wider up top side to side than others.

I'll try to take some pick in the car and post them. Oh, mine has a grey cloth cover and not denim as in the attached photo.

Very nice...it seems the narrow base makes all the difference.
