I've looked through the archives, anyone recently attempt putting a child seat in the back? I'm trying to find a good model that will fit securely.

Most child booster seats fit horribly - they are too wide.
We have Britax boosters that we have been using since @ age 2 or 3. My 6 year old and 4 year old fit back there OK. Usually, it is just two or three of us in the car and they fight over who gets to sit up front with daddy. Anyhow, the Britax boosters are very streamlined and fit very well, but the seat tips side to side a bit so I usually secure it with a tie strap around the rear seatback.
Even better might be this booster with its back removed??? Leg space is short back there, even for kids and a narrow booster without a back would be more accommodating. Unfortunately, the seatbelt mounts back there are fairly far forward and without the back, I am afraid that the seatbelt would not be snug enough across the lap for small children.
I don't remember the model name. It may have been called "Freeway". I'll ask the gal that purchased them, if anyone is interested.

I would really like to find one that fits well. I have three laying in the garage that don't really fit well. Either they are too wide or leave no space for legroom...

BTW Infant carriers usually fit nicely without the base and witout the carry handle in the full forward position. Toddler and "Convertible" rear-facing to forward facing models tend to fit pretty horribly, but a different kind of horrible than most booster seats. The forward facing baby/toddler seats have children's legs sticking straight forward and into the front seat backs.
With a child behind the driver, I found that I had to pull the front seat so far foward to allow for any leg space and the car is barely drivable. Life got better when the kids graduated to regular child boosters and we found one that fit.
I would never do a long road trip with small kids all cramped up in their car seats.

I have looked long and hard to buy an extra set of car seats so we wouldn't have to swap between cars all the time. I already keep 2 extras, 1 for the Porsche (front seat), 1 for the truck. I haven't come across anything "affordable" that doesn't have a booster seat width issue in the 928. The manufacturers add cupholders and armrests even on the cheapest models. They simply do not fit back there.
The Britax boosters that we use for everyday use fit in the 928 but this manufacturer's stuff is ridiculously priced. I think the toddler boosters were over $200. I don't think my wife ever told me what the child boosters cost, but I wouldn't be surprised if she paid $150 each for them.

Do you need rear shoulder belts for most baby car seats, or just the lap belts? I know the booster seats need the shoulder belt, but I'm talking about the infant/toddler seats. Has anyone tried adding these LATCH system hooks that are found on newer cars? That might be easier than the shoulder belts.

I don't think that shoulder belts are required on any seat. Recommended yes, but legally required? They are definitely an added safety element when using a child booster seat and if you regularly have age 4 - 7 children in the back, you may want to investigate fitting shoulder belts back there. Infant and toddler seats already have integrated 5 point harnesses.
I thought that LATCH system was just another way of securing the seat in the car.
There are several places to secure additional tie down straps. When we had baby/toddler seats we used tie down straps (some car seats came with them) to cinch down on the front of the seat - without them the seat would not stay snugly in place. I think the LATCH system is supposed to improve on the old method of buckling + using tie downs to secure a seat.
Lap belts should be adequate for any of the full-bodied toddler seats & infant seats - particularly if you use an additional tie down in front.

Checking the archives from two years ago tells us nothing about what products are actually available today. Since stuff like this changes on at least an annual basis, there should be at least annual updates here.
Even my information above is getting old - heck, for all I know, the booster seat models that we are using may now only come with cupholders and would not longer fit.
NC just passed a law this year requiring up to age 8 in booster seats. I had hoped that my boy, once in 1st grade could ride in the back without all this stuff. I may now be back on the market for another couple of NARROW child booster seats to simplify the multiple car seat juggling excercise.
Anybody with recent experience here?

I have never seen any real results on a thread about child seats. I would imagine that if one of the big three would offer a good solution, that would result in a fair amount of sale for them. I would buy two immediately, since I am not very happy with the way my kids are sitting in the back of my 928. I have tried to make it as good and secure as possible with belts and multiple straps, but I am always concerned when I have them in the car.
How much is the Porsche seat? Is it only a booster? I would assume it is 4 years and up then...

I have been using a Fisher-Price booster seat in the back of the 928 and it fits perfectly as it has a very narrow base. It cost $79 at Toys-R-Us a few years ago. If you need a front-facing child seat that uses its own seatbelts you would need to install a retaining strap in the rear compartment. You would have to do this yourself because you won't find a shop that will touch anything in this area that's not OEM (because of potential litigation).
