Since I had my instrument cluster out so many times lately to fix my speedo connection problem I thought I'd write up a summary so others could do it easier:
Tools needed:
Sockets: 27mm, 10mm, 8 mm, 5mm allen (with 6" extensions)
Phillips screwdriver
Procedure(removal):
Disconnect battery by pulling ground strap under tool kit
Pull off horn button
Unscrew steering wheel(27mm), place on passenger seat with horn button
Raise pod to highest position
Remove black plastic cover over instrument light rheostat etc,(phillips)
Remove dash-colored plastice cover over signal stalk, etc. (phillips, 10mm)
Loosen triple switch clamp screw(8mm)
Remove allen bolts holding pod(5mm allen) far left and right under pod
The pod is now loose, wiggle triple switch and pod toward rear of car
Disconnet triple switch, three connectors
Disconnect three instrument cluster connectors each 14-pin
Remove instrument cluster by pushing driver side toward windshield and then entire cluster toward driver side and out
Installation:
Find the rubber and metal bushings that position the driver side of the cluster and tape them in place (they may fall behind pod during removal)
Put cluster in place in loose pod
Reconnect vertical 14-pin connector behind middle of cluster
Reconnect triple switch and replace loosely
Wiggle pod over triple switch and into position, loosley fasten with allen bolts
Tighten triple switch clamp screw
Reconnect left and right 14-pin connectors beneath cluster
Reattach dash colored triple switch cover
Tighten allen bolts
Re-attach black cover, steering wheel and horn button
Re-connect battery
Reasons for doing this:
Fixing instruments, changing light bulbs, fixing circuit foil, improving connections to cluster, others.
Hope this helps someone,
Dave McKenz

Here's an easier method...
Light match,
drop,
walk away...![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Sorry, pod work is my least favorite on 928's. I'd rather pull a motor, on a Sunday, without beer.

couple things to add if you don't mind
if you're of normal size or larger, I recommend you remove the front seat or take up yoga
also, you don't mention disconnecting the pod switches... for this I recommend you mark each as you take them off so you're not referencing part #s while reassembling

Shane really enjoyed zeroing out his odo with the fog light switch, and was almost able to stretch his little finger all the way to hold the zero button in with his hands on the wheel, so as to not flash fogs.

I once put mine all together when Chris Ford came by and said: "no, got it all backwards" .... looking at the little elbow mount thingies. Took the whole pod off again reversed the thingies, to find .... now it was wrong

Rixter,
Thanks. I know this is old hat to you, but if someone is just pulling the cluster, they don't need to disconnect the pod switches. Part of the reason I wrote this was to make it seem more approachable if the instrument cluster is all you're after.
Regarding pulling the seat, sounds great. See how tight it is under the dash and you make the call.
If you need to completely remove the pod, definitely mark or label each of the 5 pod switches and connectors for easier re-assembly.
Any other suggestions more than welcome.
BTW I meant to have replacement bulbs available next time I pulled my cluster but never got around to it. Maybe next time?

Hi Derek,
Follow procedure and you'll have instrument cluster in your hands. The light bulbs are all accessible from the back side. 10 screws remove the clear plastic hood from the instruments and each gauge is held by 3-5 screws to the rear shell.
Jager has some nice cosmetic items and LED illumination you could install from this point. Other possiblities abound. Like I said it's nice to be able to do this when your speedometer starts acting funky.
Good luck,
Dave
