18"X9" Wheels All Around?
A few years ago I saw a set of 17X9.5 wheels in the Devek Catalog, and it said that this was the largest fitment for a 928. They were "Porsche Cup" wheels, and were 9.5" wide on all 4 corners.
Then just lately, on 928 Spec. website I saw what seems to be the same wide wheels offered for all 4 corners. This looks awesome, but I have two questions and one thing to point out.
First, what are the offsets for these wide boys (65 all around? 65F, 47R?...)
Second, when you go this wide, what is the "rub" so to speak. Whee could the fronts rub if you get them too wide? Devek suggested 255/45's up front.
And last, I also saw on 928 Spec. site that they have Moda R6 18X8 F and 18X9 R for sale for a nice price. BUT they say the front offset is slightly too small and they may stick out more than expected but not rub . So... I go to TireRack.com and look up the offsets and see they are 47F and 52R, and I start wondering if you could mount the 18X9 52mm offsets on the Front and Rear of a 928 and simulate the Cup wheels menioned above?
Seems like those Carolina Sharksters would have thought of this if it was possible, so I'm asking. The R6 is a really nice elegent wheel and a nice option to "Twist" Boxster or C2 wheels. - Ruf

68mm offset at all corners WITH 17mm 89GT spacers on the rear. Along with the great handling and looks, this setup also allows you to rotate your tires like a normal car.
>Second, when you go this wide, what is the "rub" so to speak. Whee could >the fronts rub if you get them too wide?
With our recommended 255/40s at all for corners there will be no rubbing at any stock or "sane" ride heights. You can also use a 255/40 front and 265/40 rear for a little wider rear but you will lose the "rotate" option.

Great idea, but the math doesn't work when you factor in the larger tire. With 47 offset on the 8" wheel you can only use a 225 width tire and you must keep stock ride height to avoid rubbing (we not talking proper scrub radius etc, as that is another subject, just simple clearance). Going to a 9" wide wheel means you should use a 255 width tire and the combination of the 255 width tire with the 52 offset on 9" front is gonna lead to some issues. The minimum offset we will recommend on a 9" front would be around 64mm offset. In reality the difference between a 52 and 64 is approx 1/2" and that is a LOT when you are trying to make the combo work on the front, especially with a 30mm wider tire.
Hope that makes some sense, if not feel free to call me and we can discuss further.
BTW, I have been keeping an eye out for exactly the combo you speak of and as of 6 months ago I hadn't found it. I will do some more research and see if anything new has popped up.

I would love a set of the 17" Cup Racers Set on my GTS. I just have a tough time justifying the $3775. Do you suppose there is a used set out there somewhere?
BTW, there is nothing better than driving a 928 with the same size wheels on all corners. I had 9" Club Sports on my ex-86.5 and there was nothing better. Very predictable in the turns.

>Wouldn't this fix/correct/adjust the understeer Sharks have with the stock set up?
Yes, and I have also found any time you get up to 255s on the front it fixes/corrects/adjusts the understeer dramatically. If it doesn't, I know of some swaybars that will :-)

Unless I am not seeing the big picture here, it would be wayyyyyyyy cheaper to just find a stock set of... well, whatever, but lets say the cups in 17". Buy two sets of fronts with the correct 68mm offsets, go down to your custom wheel shop and have them widen the wheel. They just cut the inner half or lip out and weld on a wider half. I guarantee that this is going to be much cheaper than buying those wider wheels. I am about to have this done to a set of 4 Phone Dials !!!

Three Wheelin'
For the life of me I have never understood what is the "conventional" wheel and tire fitment on the 928. Given our front engine layout and damn near perfect 50/50 balance, you would think tire and wheel sizes would be fairly close when comparing the fronts to back. But what is being run is more like what is run on the rear engined and biased 911's. This has never made much sense to me.

Snipe,
>I dont get any understeer. If anything, i'd like to reduce my oversteer
Is this with stock wheels, tires, suspension? If not please give us details of your setup (tire sizes, wheel sizes, shocks. springs, sway bar specs. etc.) and I can make a recommendation

I LOVED my original phone dials, but hated how narrow they were.
Getting big fat phone dials would look AWESOME!

I had a 928er call me telling me he was taking a set of phone dials, milling the centers out and using them on a custom set of 3-piece 18" wheels. That was years ago, never heard back anything else about it.

The reason to have bigger meats in back is that they need a larger contact patch. With 50/50 weight balance the tires (on each side) see the same lateral force in a corner. Add in some throttle and the rears can break free.
So the bottom line is whatever you've got in front, you can always use a bit more in the back.
