Default Crank Scraper Q

If the idea is to skim excessive oil off the crankshaft preventing oil "whip" then why is crankscraper's sraper located on the right side of the block (pass side)?

In other words the crankshaft is right hand rotation, why scrape the oil off and then dip into the oil sump?

Or is the oil level on the 16v far enough away from the rotating crank that the weights don't dip into the oil..............

As the crank turns in a clock-wise direction, when viewed from the front, the scraper collects oil on its bottom then drains away. The natural state is for a cloud of oil droplets to swirl around with the crank. This takes power to move and prevents the oil form going back to the sump.

The crank weights do not touch the oil in the sump.

does reducing the crank caused "whip" reduce lubrication of the piston bottoms , as thats the only way the pistons get oil. S4 have no oiling in the pistons, or is just the oil leaving the bearings that get forced up to the piston areas?

always was curious about this.

Oil from connecting rod side clearance oils the pistons & pins. If the crank scraper is in the proper location it will not affect this.

The connecting rod is drilled so the wrist pin gets pressurized oil from the "big" end of the rod.

On a american V-8 rotating crank splashes in the oil and lubes the cylinders, and provide a seal between the rings and cylinder wall.

But the 928 crank is nowhere near the oil in the pan. So on this engine could a crank scraper shorten the cylinder/ring life span? Porsche designed the oil draining from the heads to drip on the rotating crank. Thus is the reason for the OEM oil separator and so much problems with crankase blow-by being oil suspended.

Not on the 928

.
The 928 crank is only 3/8 in. away from the rear 2/3 of the sump, so oil draining back along this section will be next to the spinning crank.

As Hammer said, rod side clearance oil lubs the pistons

Oil from heads does not drip on the crank on either 16v or 32v.that happens on USA V8's

martin D,
yep, your right on all points. News to me that the wrist-pin is not pressure lubricated.
