Looking at getting a new set for the S4 with Cup 1 Knock-off's. Mostly street with a few track days also. Currently have the Potenza RE 750's (fronts are close to being corded). Very good tire. Looking to match close to that without spending both an arm and a leg, same price range though ($150ish front 235/45/17, $180ish rear 255/40/17). The brdgestones never balanced out right, and would set over night and lup untill they heated up. At the track I roll them over to the arrows at 40 psi hot. Haven't heard them screech at the limit.
Let me know what to look at. Yes I know its the ultimate question with tons of opinion, take it for what it is.
I may just buy two used fronts to get me through next year.
For your price targets I would go with Yoko AVS Sport - owned 3 sets, still happy now with the last set on my 944. But they do flat spot overnight.
The Yoko ES100s are very nice on my Mercedes but not something I would put on my 928.
Stay away from Kumho 712 - hated them on my 928. Bad tires.
Bridgestone S-03s were very nice on my 928 but they also flat spotted overnight.
The only truly high performance tire that had not flat spotted from parking overnight is the Pilot Sport, and for me, worth the extra money for it's overall performance and build quality - currently on my 928 in 18" diameter.
Tommy, the Yoko AVS Sport is twice as expensive as the ES 100s. I also like the Bridgestones S-03s, but that is not the price range Curt is pursuing. To me, the Yoko AVS Sport is one of the best tires on the market , just a bit pricey, but well worth the money
Again, I suggest you go to www.tirerack.com and it allows you to compare the different tires, and read feed back from persons that have purchased that particular tire
Larry, Curt is looking for tires in the $150ish for 235/45-17 (ES100 at $118. AVS Sport at $159) and $180ish for 255/40-17 (ES100 at $118. AVS Sport at $168). The AVS Sport hits his price target almost exactly.
I rank the AVS Sport in the same class as the S-03; the AVS Sport is quieter, ride better, and has higher traction on launches; the S-03 handles better and does not flat spot as much from parking. They are basically equal with the S-03 costing approximately 25% higher.
I agree with Ernest. I just bought a set of Fuzions for my S4 and I've been really happy with them. I've noticed a quieter ride over my old tires. The price is good too.
So Fuzion ZRi's or Yoko AVS seem like the order. Thanks guys.
Tirerack comparison is good, but I wanted a little feedback from the 928 crowd first. My father is a installer for tirerack, so I get a small discount also.
