Default meanwhile, back at the professor's laboratory...(Ott fender flares)

Today I had the extreme pleasure of watching Louie install his new fender flares. Actually just one, as he already had one installed.

These are much more brawny than the GTS arches.

Here are some pics:

hmm... pic upload isn't working at the moment. I'll keep trying. Sorry for the teaser.

Here's the streamroller:

Driver side w/vent for oil cooler. This is the side that Louie installed today. The screws are just for compression while the epoxy cures. They are later removed the the seam blended with body filler.

Here's the passenger side, check out bitchin' filler cap:

More to come later. I'm not able to upload all the pics that I have for some reason and don't have time to fight it right now.

When we were there after Sharks in the Hood, we could see how much energy Loui put into making these flares integrate perfectly with the 928s shape. They are very wide - but given the other piece we saw in his lab, it is clear he'll need to cover a lot of rubber...

But those side moldings have to go when the car is repainted!

Thanks for helping today Adam. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised at the "look" with both sides on and with the wide rubber on the ground. I put a few pics on my web site here, but none of the installation process.

At least, someone has made it! They blend so good with the shape of the car

I hope you have plans to make some wider front wings also?

Sweet. I'd love some front and 3/4 views of the whole car to see how the whole package comes together.

No doubt Nicole, got me some of these in anticipation for my own install:

Here's a shot of the prepared wheel opening. The bonding surface on the original quarter panel is prepared with a sanding wheel, and followup up with an abrasive cleaning wheel. Per the recommendation of the epoxy manufacturer, no solvents are used. A handheld brush is the last stop on the flare side to remove any loose resin or fibers. Note how Louie has notched the corners of the wheel opening to easier manipulate them to meet the contours of the flare. The inner surface of the airscoop was notched as well to be able to form that nice curve, and then welded back up and primered.

Here's a full on shot of the wheel opening prior to installation:

Computer still isn't cooperating with me on getting the photos up so that's all for now. To be continued.............

Probably I will, but later. I still have much work to do to get this car back on the road I can't add to the project. Making the molds for the rears took a very long time.

The side moldings will soon be history! BTW, the metal bonding adhesives are so good now that I plan to bond a patch to the inner side of the door skin and fill with epoxy filler, followed by epoxy primer/sealer, urethane primer/surfacer/top coat, rather than welding the hole(s). I've heard of too many problems cropping up later after welding the holes.

I've heard of too many problems cropping up later after welding the holes.

I ground my rub strip holes down aggressively, then dented them in a bit to form a larger area, and filled the hole with long strand fiberglass. That area was then skimmed with normal body filler and painted with epoxy primer and then high fill primer and painted with the rest of the car.

I hope it holds. My idea was that I did not do this on the doors and instead BOUGHT hole-less doors, - the reason was that the constant shutting of the door could loosen the body filler and fiberglass, but the rest of the holes would be stationary.

We'll see I guess.

Great fender flares Louie. Great price too. I wish se could see them on the car with some over wheel choices to see what the flares to to the "visual weight" of the car.

Will you repaint in a different color?

Thanks Brendan. To my eye, the fenders add weight/bulk to the rear and give a more "muscle car" look, but still follow the overall styling theme/visual cues of the stock 928. Not outrageous, or "over the top". Each side is approx 2.5" wider than an S4/GT. Maybe Adam can give his opinion. I'll post pics when I get them blended in and finished to show the whole car. The engine is out so the front is quite high and still wouldn't show the true overall appearance. I'm not going to change colors although I would like to go to something more striking than "virgin" white. I love some of the blue colors such as Cobalt Blue. White cars do seem to have a historical performance advantage for 928s; Devek, Mark Anderson, Bill Ball's, George Suennen, Tim & Cheryl Dey, Keith Widom's awesome GTS. Heh, heh.
