Forget the mirrors, you need some new tires, BC!

Just sharing my mirror mod!

This old thread seemed the most appropriate for my question:

Does anyone know what mirror BASES these are? (not sure if they are all the same) I am exploring some side mirror options and these bases would work better with what I am looking at vs the flag base or even the 928 aero (GTS) base. Part of my exploration included the Jacquemond "aero" mirrors but when I sent these pictures to Jacquemond, he said they did not test using that setup. He said his mirrors are stuck to the door and window frame but could probably be made to work as shown.

Thank you in advance!

Looks very nice Åke!

I dont want to have to plug the stock mirror door holes and I actually prefer the mirrors on the stalks as shown in my pictures. However, I do not recognize the non-stock stalks used. If I have to, I can use either the flag or GTS stalks/bases.

Strosek did supply the small angeled sidemirrors on the earlier kits if the customer wanted them. I think they look period perfect. As always, not everone's taste. The most interesting thing is where Vittorio sourced them... Any ideas? Yes, early fiat tipo models had them originally mounted...

This is the first version of Strosek side mirrors which I have on my oldest Strosek car. Non electric mirror.
Looks good on the Fiat Tipo too.

Some time ago I started a project, one of my now many incomplete projects, to adapt a Porsshe mirror to the 928 in place of both the flag mirrors and even the GTS aero mirrors. What I found was the Boxster mirrors from the early part of this Century that actually fit into the bottom front corner of the door window. They are a bit larger than the GTS Aero mirrors, which is nice, but they don't mount to the top of the door skin. I had workied over one or maybe both of the mirror bases to match the front corner of the 928 door window, which is different from the Boxster by quite a bit, and then I need to make up some fibreglass molds to form the new shrouds. Is that a word? I did figure out the mounting of the mirrors and that is pretty simple, as I recall, and will clear the original window as it transitions, but it takes the new outer schroud and a little kind of cover for the inside of the window to cover up the mounting.

I'll go out a bit later and see if I can find any of the pieces I have developed for this modification from which I had hoped to develop some molds for the new mounting covers. Then I'll post some pictures. The only drawback to this modificatin is that it will only apply when you are going to repaint the car or are otherwise willing to weld up the original mirror holes and paint them over to match. Stand By.

@WestInc ! Thank you!! One of my outstanding questions was where did Strosek, Koenig, and Lotec (don't believe I have seen them on a Gemballa or a DP) come up with that shape? Did they source it from an existing design? Now I know that answer! I have seen several custom cars in person and am always impressed when parts from other vehicles can be utilized to great effect on a vehicle they were never intended for!

@Jerry Feather Jerry, I came across your Aero-like Mirror Conversion thread as part of my exploration. Alas, I am not currently interested in a window corner mount, though they do tend to be very clean. Hmmm, that is one of my criteria....

Bringing us back to my question 😁: what might be the source of the mirror "stem" ("base") that I show in my pictures above? I'm talking about the part that supports the actual mirror housing and also attaches to the door. Does anyone know of any such non-OEM stems/bases which can be mounted on our doors and used as a side mirror support?
