I'm pretty sure that its not illegal to use a camera for a rearview "mirror". Lots of trucks and RV's come with this installed from the factory. Side view mirrors are something I have never seen before.
As far as hot rods go, they are grandfathered in regards to alot of modern safety equipment. Thats why alot of them don't require seat belts, catalytic converters, back-up lights etc.

hey porken, cause the mirrors dont weigh much you might end up with a lot of vibration/buzz. but i like that style as well, to me they have a very functional form.

Warning- 928 Purests may want to advert their eyes from this photo showing a GM part mounted on a 1978 Porsche 928. The creative and inquisitive may find a possible solution for their application!!! There are several mirror configurations that may work. But I found that the 1995-98 Olds Aurora mirrors meet most of the criteria for a low cost, geometrically correct, light weight, sporty looking side mirror which can hide the factory holes.Usually about $35 each on ebay. See the photos attached.

Lloyd,
When will you paint that thing? - stands out like Rudolphs nose right now - and its hard to see the finished effect. It actually looks quite interesting - trying to look beyond the color...
Maybe a BW image would be easier to look at.... That is a pretty jazzy mirror for an Olds though!

I had a quick go at BW & Brightness change - looks OK - just a bit on the big side - best alternative I've seen here so far... radical looking!
It seems to have a long offset from the base... does it pivot at all? - the GTS mirrors pivot on the base - helps if someone bangs into them - what about these - they seem they'd have more leverage...

Alan, Yes I like them bright RED. No, they do not pivot. However they do come with full electric servo adjust and they are heated. For my purposes I choose full manual adjust and standard ambiant temperature. Not for everyone! But it is a low cost alternative to the square brick mirror.

Sorry, No other pictures. Heading out of town for a couple days. I suggest visiting your local grocery store parking lot for a closer look at an Oldsmobile Aurora mirror OR 95-98 Buick Riviera. The difficulty with the mirrors is the angle of the base plate to match the door.

here is my attempt at photoshopping the mirror on. I tried to get the color angle and size as best as possible. Looks pretty IMHO. I'll probably get one from a salvage yard and test fit it before I decide anything.
