The Vortech, which I bought, is very very simple. One impeller, two or three bearings, and two seals.

Very simple stuff.

Thanks for the explanation, Gretch.

Censorship is never positive, in my opinion. That includes, self-censorship ("They can't make me shut-up if I don't say anything").

I miss the input and exchange. Diversity maintains strength.
Stay vocal, Gretch.

True, but one monkey using a hammer to install one bearing can make you wish you had paid the extra $. You never know the history of a used ebay unit. As I said, it's a personal decision, risk/benefit....

And I found some CERAMIC bearinsg in the sizes needed for the V-1s. This is supposed to make them more efficient, heat-production-wise.
My point is that BECAUSE I bought from ebay, I took it apart.

Good call. Brendan, are you one to buy something brand-new... then immediately take it apart before using it to "improve" it? I do this sort of thing all the time...

I always have to take something apart. It makes me feel better. 928s, bmws, engines, interiors, computers, superchargers....

We tried a "shoot-out" once to put MAX HP to rest once before, Remember?
The 2004 928 OCIC convention in Wichita KS? There was supposed to be a stroker car, and a FAST car, and John Kuhn's Turbo, and me witrh a CS car.

But I am the only one that showed up at the dyno. Where were you guys?

Seriously - this has been a good, tame post. It seems as though we have collectively matured a bit.

Yes, 525HP and up with the CS kit is well documented and we have repeated it many times.

No, max HP is not the only thing you should consider when selecting a kit.

Ask yourself:

Q1: Where do you like your power - where do you like to drive - 2 to 4000 RPM (like an automatic) mostly or 3 to 5000 (Like a 5 speed)?

Q2: how comfortable are you with a wrench in your hand? Do you prefer a more involved installation, or an easier one?

Q3: Do you like Supercharger "whine" or do you prefer the "Stealth" approach?

Q4: Do you have to do regular emissions inspections in your location, or no?

I have more (lots more) but I am sure that will get you started.

Jon, all the kits and proposed kits are a box of compromises. Each one does X better than Y. You need to make your own list of objectives and select accordingly.

Give me a call toll-free at 877-FOR-928M and I can explain more.

The wonderful thing here, is that for a discontinued, limited-production automobile, is that you have choices at all! Amazing.

I totally agree. It really is a great time to be a 928 owner/lover. Hopefully it only gets better.

Hey Carl...that weekend I was nursing a very sloppy trans...I had to make sure I could get home. The tranny could not hold the torque at all. Remember, Goldmember was driven from Cincinnati to Wichita...it was never a "trailer queen". The Goldmember put down 270 WHP and 355 ft-lbs torque (3,300 RPM) on 9 psig. When it was dynoed it was a full 100F in the dynojet room. Bad move on my part...that temp cost me at least 25-35 HP guaranteed...possibly more. Those were K-24 units...very small turbos running through a slushbox with stock 80 cams on a 100F day with minimal intercooler flow.

The GM HP curve was basically flat from 3,500 to 5,800 RPM. When I dynoed the Callaway it was like 65 degrees and the car made a full 100 HP more than the Goldmember. Larger turbos and just a few psig more boost, plus cooler temps.

I hope to have K-26/Euro cams installed soon.

I waited 9 pages to chime in...
I have the supermodel kit, I like it, I like what 928 Specialists has done to improve it.
Having owned but never installed a vortech based kit I can say just from appearances the
Carl/ Murph system looks great and should run great.

It seems like a win win situation... seriously.
