New Windshield from SAFELITE
ive had a rock chip below the driver side wiper in my windshiled since i bought the car 4yrs ago, just a small chip. Last spring it decided to spread and this summer it got a lot worse.
I believe i got the tip from reading one of Bill ***** posts and used Safelite.
I called them yesterday at 9am...they were here at 1030 today with the windshield and installed it.
basically 3 hrs...A LOT longer than it usually takes as the side moldings on the windshield were glued in by some previous owner/activity Most of the time was spent trying to nurse them off and then cleaning up the mess( to DREMEL). Of course im paying the guy and get my hands dirty in the job..just the way i am.
Bottom line
part...288.99
labor..60.00 ( i got my moneys worht out of that )
total...348.99
tax...22.39
TOTAL...371.38.
Nice thing is...this was done at my house! I didnt have to drive all the way over to the other side of town to have it done.!! GREAT SERVICE and i would highly recomend it.
Tip: get your self familiar with the way the trim molding comes off. Odds are the guy who does the job hasnt seen a 928 before. A Quick call to Jim and Tom at 982 intl solved that. Actually, if the side moldings werent glued on a call really wouldnt have been needed....we were pushing on the trim pretty hard and it wasnt moving so i figured there may be more to this than what we were seeing...typical 928ism right!
also..this window did NOT come with the antenna, so before he took the old one away i clipped the connecter off it and will wire my own if i need to. Heck i only listen to CDs and local stuff anyway.
some pics below....
a view i havent had in 4yrs of ownership!! crystal clear..no pits..cracks...blemishes!
Andrew, please place a small broken chunk of windshield in your shrine as i have a round trip drive to LA to do this week. I already have visions of that small pebble hurtling towards my car like a large asteroid!

Hey Tony, that looks good. I replaced the windshield in my 81" when I did the repaint. I used the Fuyao glass also. I got mine at a place here in Carson City called Fast Glass. Mine was $166.00 plus tax. I glued it in myself after much elbow grease to remove the old adhesive. That was the hardest part of the whole job. Actually a pretty easy process once you have done it. I would say a project most here could do themselves.

Tony,
You've given me hope. When I made the appointment with Safelite (National) they gave me the local dealer's number. I once again called and assured me they have the glass in stock, and could install it tomorrow if I could drive over. (I'm too busy this week). So, they are supposed to come out Monday A.M. and do the deed here at my office. Keeping my fingers crossed that I don't get that 8am "its a dealer product only" call.
I've been missing out on PCA DE's for the last two years because of my cracked windshield, hopefully I'll be able to get back into reigning terror at the local track with my other 928 brethren.
What attachment is that on your dremel? Is it a wire wheel? Did you mask of the A pillars after the trim was removed or before? GTS upgrade or stick with the S4 moulding?

I got a Safelite windshield a few months ago and much like yourself a good deal of time was spent on clean up. Mine was a couple of bucks less though and I'm quite happy with the windshield.

Glad to hear it worked out, Tony. Not sure what was going on with the glue. Both installers had no trouble with my moldings - they just snap off. They were very careful. No Dremels used. Cleaned the channels and primed the metal. While the primer dried they installed the mirror. Primer is important - I can see yours was done. Also, the rubber spacers on the lower edge need to be there. Prices vary from area to area. Yours was fair enough.

I have an antenna which may explain the price, but mine cost over $1000 installed. German glass. The shop did a terrible job. They cut into one of the leather covers for the A pillar, and misaligned the side mouldings relative to the upper one and I had to spend an hour re-aligning the trim pieces. I do not recommend this shop in Santa Clara. They said they would pay for the damaged leather piece if I took it off and brought it down to them, but I never went back because I had a spare the same color. Crummy work in my opinion. I will investigate National next time.

In Denmark the best price for the windshield itself was 1000 $ -in germany 700 $, so when Jim payd 166 $ + tax ( I asume that tax is less than 500 $ ) somebody is making good money over here:::: .

All,
that is not really the case. The glass shop tried to install the Fuyayo stuff on my car... I called them up today and asked them to take it back off. Note that the Porsche original stuff should have dual laminated with plastic insert glass. Use Sekurit or the other type depending on the year. Anyways, the Porshe original would be $800 + install, but the dealer will have to bring it from germany. The idiots while installing the chinese crap also scratched my side molding on the car's water drain, the trim pieces are all misaligned.... talk about YUK. I expected my car to come back by friday... now only God knows when. My patience is running thin. Anyways i still would not suggest putting some chinese parts on our Stuttgart babies

I really can't see spending that much for a windshield, especially when I end up getting rock hits due to my commute. I dont know about the Chinese glass, but the Pilkington glass I got for $280 installed is fine and the installer was a pro. Done in an hour.

Thanks, Tony!
I just checked with the local (Austin, TX) Safelite location and they can do the
same for me.
I'm replacing the windshields in my 82 and 84.
Looking at your photos, this actually looks easier than I expected. I'll probably
do as much of the prep work to the 84 as I can at home (as your photos reveal)
and then drive the car to work so that they can finish the job here and
hopefully, not have to spend approx 3 hours on it.
I'll probably buy a second one for my 82 and do it myself at home.
I pulled the rear hatch glass out and reinstalled it myself during the total
rebuild of the 79. That was very easy (in my book). The windshield can't be all
that much different.

Wow you guys get cheap prices, we don't even come close to that around here. I spent an afternoon calling some of the places named in a previous thread on windshields around the country and was quoted ridiculous prices of like 700 + just for the glass.
I even told them another 928 guy had just bought there and they acted clueless. What gives? Rons' experience sounds more like it.

I have the same question as Adam - "GTS upgrade or stick with the S4 moulding?" I've heard that the GTS trim looks better and cuts down on wind noise from the top of the windshield. Has anyone put this upgraded trim on a S4? Results?

Tony-
Sorry I just got around to reading this thread. Nice view! I'll print off that picture of your removal and let the shine chew on that - my drilled-out caliper bolt is wearing thin .

A month or so back I took a 50 cent piece sized chip in my window. Insurance gave me a check for 1200.00 bones to have OEM Glass installed. Apparently, they couldnt find aftermarket glass anywhere.
Last Week - I took a chip right under the wiper blades. Saw it coming in slow motion. Not too large and I could probably have it fixed.
Im driving home from Home Depot (on the same day) when a hose (the hose that leads from the heater control valve to the engine - It's about 3" long), breaks and shoots hot antifreeze/water onto the window. Causing the chip to become a crack in about a second.
Since I already filed a claim once this year - Im real hesitant to do it again.
Being it has the antenna in it - its going to be a royal PIA to replace at a reasonbale cost (around here).
