Tool questions (hydraulic press and engine stand)
There's a great tool sale going on here and I'm looking at two things but want to make sure they will be useful for the 928.
First is a 6 ton hydraulic press for $49. Is that strong enough for everything that may need to be popped apart or pressed together on the 928. They also have a 12 ton for $99 so I could get that if needed, but like the small size of the 6 ton.
Second is an engine stand that holds up to 750lbs for $29. Is an engine stand useful for things like engine mounts, etc. or do i need a hoist type instead?
TIA!

The engine stand is only iseful if / when you have an engine out of the car. Very good for engine work in that case. To get the engine in and out you need a hoist.

you need 5 tons of pressure to press off gears in a manual tranny, at least for the 84 and earlier, not sure about later. where was that press when i was taking my tranny apart?
i'd buy both if you work on autos a fair amount. seems like a steal.

You'll want the bigger engine stand. Trust me.

I'm with Brendan, my 2000Ib looks decidedly fragile at times. Also with lessons learned I would pay more $$ and get one with a crank to turn the engine round.

That stand is too small for a V8. 750lb is best suited for 4 cylinder engines. The press is borderline. Sales like this are frequent. I see them all the time. Unless you need the stand and press right away, don't buy them. They will take up usefull room in the garage.

What about a 4000 lb engine hoist for $149? Is that a good price and strong enough to lift the engine during mount replacement?
I think I need both the hoist and the press because I will be doing the mounts and rear wheel bearings in the next month or two. I'll go with the 12 ton press since everyone seems to say more is better.

Yes, if you don't take all the bolts out the hoist will lift the car WITH the engine.
But buy the bigger engine stand. I'm sure you enjoy your feet the way they are - three dimensional.

If I the stand too then I will get the larger one like you recommend. I think it holds 1400lbs.

Well, no, sorry. If you aren't actually removing the engine you don't need the stand.
