Default Bad wheel bearing?

Over the past few weeks I've noticed a roaring noise emanating from (I think) the left rear of my '86. It's been gradual but is now pretty loud. It seems to go away when turning left and get a bit worse when turning right. A rear seat passenger noticed a bit of a vibration there as well (which I know is a new thing.) Tires look good and are at proper pressures. A change of differential/transmission oil had no effect. That's a bad wheel bearing, right? Anything else it could be? I saw the nichols site has some instructions on changing them out. Any other advice/stuff I should know? Should I do both rears?

Thanks!

probably just one side is bad, and you can check by the way I did. jack the car up, stands, and then put it in gearand get the car in 5th , 4-5000rpm and listen to the bottom of the shock with a stethascope. the louder one or one that is howling, needs to be replaced

Didn't Chuck Z recently have this problem? Turned out to be his U-joint/drive shaft. I'll see if I can find it.

I'm having my wheel bearing replaced today, to test I put it up, took off the wheel and put it in gear and gave it a good deal of rpms.. could hear it growling big time with tire off
half shaft is another possibility but that's generally more of a clunking sound

Found it. Read Post # 51 for a test to see what you have.

One other possibility is the service brake. I'd take the caliper and rotor off and spin the hub to see if the noise is still there. Good luck.

The change in tonewwhen turning right /left as it loads and unloads the wheel is a good indication of wheel bearing.

Thanks, guys. I just read the "clicking noise from left rear wheel" thread that Andrew linked to-- very helpful! My noise is much more of a low-pitched "roar" that changes with turning (as opposed to a CV-joint "clicking"), which I was always taught was fairly diagnostic of a wheel bearing. I'll get a look at it and let you know what I find.

Anyone know someone near the Bronx (NYC) who can press in a new bearing? I'm fairly sure I can get everything apart (322ft-lb you say??) but I obviously can't do that part.

Undoing the hub nut is just a matter of brute force, removing the lower suspension bolt can be a real PITA. One side took me 8 hours, the other only 90 minutes. Separating the hub from the hub carrier was beyond me, I just took the whole assembly plus a new bearing to a workshop. A press makes it all much easier.
