Would have bought it, probably would not have kept it very long.

I bought my '82 totaled before rennlist, before 928 international, before 928 specalists, before devek, before ebay, etc. and was able to totally rebuild it and get it on the road. So it is possible to play with these toys with only the factory manual, a list of wrecking yards from the back of panarama, an occasional swap meet, and an occasional trip to the dealer for gaskets and such. But let me tell you....it is a WHOLE lot more fun this way.
I think it would be impossible now without non dealer support as the dealers seemed to have raised their prices and dropped their support. The first problem would be the manual. I bought mine from somewhere I don't remember for around $400 and change. I think I heard the dealer price for a manual is something like $1200 now. That would pretty much kill most projects, I think.

I bought mine only after consulting the old usenet Porsche list, then porschefans and porschelist, which precede Rennlist as we know it now. (Thanks John D. !!!). Big key part of the decision was finding 928 International in my back yard.

The list here is a very valuable resource, and makes it possible for me to get education on stuff that I run into on the car without having to take multiple learning-experience stabs at things. Makes longer-term ownership a little less impractical,

I might still have mine, but it would not be supercharged....no Aero mirrors, no 930 wheel, no analog clock, no 18 inch cup 2 wheels, no 928 GT factory insignia, no RMB.......IE almost no modifications at all....

I had my 86.5 for 4 years before joining rennlist's forum last January. I was however a member of the email list after the first year of ownership. I hardly ever consult the email list anymore, i find the forum to be much better.

Not sure if it's true for everyone, but I get the feeling that once you make the move from the email list to the forum, you never go back

I bought before I knew of Rennlist.

I'd have bought better, cheaper and newer if I had known.

OTOH, everything except the odometer worked on the car I bought.

It's all good.

Like a few others here, I recall that 928s4vr gave me the confidence to do my initial shark search and acquisition. Without being armed with a lot of info from that site, I'm not sure I would have taken the plunge.

Since that time, Rennlist has been the #1 go-to site for participating in a great community of enthusiasts. It's given me the confidence to take on a lot of wrenching tasks that it's unlikely I would have done otherwise.

And the "Big 3" (and the increasing number of other helpful vendors) have been instrumental in making it possible (and easy!) to get all the goodies to keep the shark going and make it even better!

Kudos to the vendors, and kudos to the enthusiasts who have put in the extra time and effort to share the knowledge and passion that make it a real pleasure to own a 928.

I was going to buy the shark anyway. Finding Rennlist(among many others, like Nichols, LandShark Oz, etc.) really helped me understand potential gotchas and evaluate the car between the time I started negotiating and the time I forked over the $, so I knew what I was getting into. Since then I've pretty well settled on Rennlist for my online shark fix...

No, but moreso ebay for parts. But-for ebay, I would not opt for a 928 and this forum is very (very) helpful for information. No, definitely not all parts come from ebay - rather scrounging used parts where used parts are needed. For new parts, I try to still with 928 sellers - just bought 4 little items from 928 motorsports (though from their ebay listings...) Previously, a Devek rising rate regulator etc.

I've had the disease since '85, and survived in relative isolation on Excellence ( the magazine), DH Industries ( remember Dave?), 928 Int'l ( when receipts were handwritten!), and an 8 vol set of the WSM. Some of the developed repair methods are a little home spun .... but have kept the cars away from other hands.
Connected with a better cure ~ two years ago by getting on line, Rennlist topping all! The latter has provided amongst other important things, a tremendous learning opportunity.
