Default 944 vs 928 - Interior Space

Hi 928 Gang!

I'm one of the 944 Forum guys and am looking to potentally get a 928 to replace my beloved 944. But before I even start looking, I want to find out about a few essentials with the interior. In the interest of time management, I thought I'd ask for your collective wisdom before venturing forth.

1) Driver Headroom and Legroom. I'm 6'2" and 200 lb, and in the 944 I can sit in a comfortable upright position with plenty of headroom. I've been in some sportscars (that will remain nameless) that had so little headroom, I couldn't fit unless I reclined the seat, which I don't like. The legroom is excellent, and I can drive all day long without feeling cramped. What about the 928?

2) Luggage Space. One of the things I like about the 944 is the ability to carry a bike in the luggage space by removing the front wheel. In fact, I can fit two. How does the 928 compare to the 944?

Thanks,
Paul

The 928 is a bigger 944, and has more room overall in pretty much all categories.

Paul,
welcome to the 928 forum..
1: I'm rather short and probably not the right person to answer this one, but my buddy is your height and has ridden with me a couple times w/ no problems in my non-sunroof car.. sunroof model you will lose a couple inches in space, however many here have solved that problem with diff seats
2: you're joking right? the 928 has plenty more hatch room than a 944, though I don't think I'd want to risk tearing one of the rear interior panels as they are considerably more $$ than a 944 one

your best bet is to hookup with some of the 928 folks in your area and see a few up close and in person...

No, I'm not joking! I have absolutely no idea. I seem to remember some car (928? Nissan 300ZX?) that had a lot of wheelwell intrusion as well as a crossmember joining the shock towers.

Also, I have a couple of cheap blankets to protect the interior, so physical wear and tear isn't an issue.

You have to sit in a 928 to compare. I fit fine in both without a helmet, and am 6'3". It is tight for me (but acceptable) in my 951 with a helmet. My father is 6'2", but is rather long in the trunk. FWIW, he fits fine in my 951 with sunroof, but is uncomfortable in a 928 with sunroof. I don't think that he'd be happy in either wearing a helmet.

Paul,
FWIW I'm 6'-2 and 200# and I am very comfortable in my 84 928S with sunroof(which cuts headroom).
Good luck and welcome.

I'm 6-1 and fit in my S4 with sunroof with no problems...I can even adjust the seat up if I wanted and still not hit my head! In general the 928 is a bigger car than the 944, the trunk is fairly large, but not really deep (about 7" at its shallowest point at the rear of the car) but it doesn't have any odd braces or anything like that!

I've got both. The 928 has a larger passenger cabin area in all ways.

The rear hatch area is comparable. One thing about the 928 is that the rear seats are split. This exposes the rear console "cubby." They are often leather and no one wants to mess that baby up. ($$) Also, the rear part may be a bit narrower as the space there on the 928 is rectangular and the 944 pinches by the seats.

I wouldn't put a bike in mine. Even with my scrap KMart "Martha Stewart" carpet I cut to fit the rear area. Saves the nice piece.

Reminds me of being at the track and a 944 guy could cram in all four race tires. Not an easy fit but it wouldn't work in a 928.

4 x 335 x 18" rims, tools , jack, tent, NOS tank, part bags, racing gear. beat that!

or, before racing, 217 racing skis and they didnt even make it pass the cassette holder behind the shifter (plus 2 guys ski stuff, and still a ton of room left over)

No substitute!

Mark, rims with no tires?

I put a pile of stuff in for DE weekends. The race tires come with the support vehicle.

Gonna get that trailer...

Lots of room in the 928 although headroom is limited. I am 6'1 long in the trunk and I cannot fit in the car comfortably with a helmet. I have about an inch and a half of room above my head without a helmet. I believe the 944 has slightly more headroom than the 928's. The 928's have a very low roofline. I would sit in one and compare.

You can find 928s without a sunroof. Might be a good option.

I slouch a lot normally and tend to sit differently in cars at different times. I'm about 6'2" 170lbs and sometimes my hair brushes against the headliner in my sunroof standard seat S2. In Rixter's sunroof sport seat S4 I had easily 2" above my head and I don't think the seat was reclined as much as mine are.

I literally fit everything I own (less my mountain bike) in my 928 when I moved this summer to British Columbia, all in one trip. (I'm a university student with hardly any assets)
I couldn't have jammed anything more in that was bigger than a pencil, but it fit. I was really surprised how much stuff can fit back there.

I also owned a 924 (probably same demensions as a 944) and it seemed like a deeper and longer hatch, but not nearly as wide as the 928. The difference is the rear seats on the 928 have more leg room, so it makes the back look smaller.

One advantage of the 924, is that it had those deep cubby holes behind the rear wheel wells.

My head brushes the roof in 928's unless its a sunroof delete. In my 944 there is more headroom, I'm 6'1"

The hatch on the 944 is more squared off and has two side cubbies down into the fenders.
