Best Roads In America for the 928
There was another thread that sparked this idea ("Tail of the Dragon")
I know there have been some posts in the past of some great roads across the US for the 928. It would be nice if we can put a list together for folks who wish to drive these roads in their region or when they are in that particular region.
I have no idea if there has ever been a list put together, but I think we should start one now.
Let's use a rating scale from 1-3,
1- nice scenic cruiser without having to keep your eyes on the road every second
2- in between (incorporating 1 and 3)
3- white knuckle, keep your sh*t focused!
Being down here in so Cal, the canyons offer up quite a bit of excitement, but you need to travel the right canyon or it is not worth driving.
Topping my list for category 3, is DECKER CANYON off of the PCH (Rte 1) in Malibu, Ca. This THING they call a road, stretches from PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) to Westlake Blvd in Thousand Oaks meeting the 101 Freeway. The road is barely wide enough for 2 vehicles to pass in the early stages from PCH. The switch backs are banked and we are talking about some serious hair pin turns in places. The road rises from the coast over the Santa Monica Mountain range and dumps you into the back of Thousand Oaks. I am guessing it is about a 20 mile run off the top of my head. There are some residential areas that one needs to watch out for when cruising through. You must stay focused as this is about the most intense road I have ever been on. It is probably better for a bike or Mini Cooper, but the 928 makes good work of it.
Catergory 2 would be LATIGO CANYON which reaches up from the PCH below Malibu, Ca and meets Kanan Road which heads into Agoura and the 101 Freeway. There are some residential areas to watch out for, but there are stretches that test the skill of the driver. Probably a 10 mile drive. Some of you may recall this as the first leg of the Sharktoberfest 2003 fun run.
Category 1 would have to be PCH itself....pretty much anywhere along the California Coast. Truly a scenic drive that will give you the whole enchilada. Runs for 100's of miles.
Another Category 2 would be RIM OF THE WORLD (Rte 18) located in the San Bernadino Mountains. This road is awesome and a stretch of it will be part of the Sharktoberfest Fun Run this year. I believe it's entire length runs 127 miles. The view are spectacular and it is a great road for the 928! The views seem like you are on Everest!
Category 3-CANYON ROAD (otherwise known as Stewarts Point Skagg Springs Road) Runs from Hwy 101 around Geyserville to Stewarts Point on the PCH in northern California. I am guessing this is about a 50 mile drive, but be forewarned, you had better have your game face on! This road will take no prisoners! They should give you some kind of trophy for surviving this road. The ups and downs, lefts and rights with no guard rails, some points where the road is 6 foot wide spitting you into an old growth Redwood Forest where a foot path has been covered with asphalt as you hook around trees larger than a light house!
Well, that's all I can think of for now...except for the drive around Lake Tahoe, but I don't remember the name of that route. It is a Category 1 and absolutely made for the 928!...Tim???

FRAZIER MOUNTAIN ROAD off Interstate 5 in the Grapevine in southern Central California. It actually changes names several times before it Tee's into Hwy 166 . This can be categorized from 1-3 depending on how fast you want to drive it. However, if you choose it to be a 3, HANG ON or you will end up in some field and won't be found for days. Not many folks travel this road...cuz there's nuthin there but hills and fields. A great drive no matter how you drive it!

Category 2 would be G16 (E Carmel Valley Road) Running between Greenfield at the 101 Freeway and Carmel on the coast (PCH) in central California. This is a great drive for a leisurly cruise with some fun mixed in. It sends you through the Carmel Valley out to the Pacific Ocean....just plain great.

It's very short, but Kruztown road late at night definitely qualifies as a #3 road. (in philly)
At the cornering speeds a 928 is capable of if you mess up, you're dead.
My kind of road.
Now if only it was about 150x longer....LOL
Kelly Drive is a really good road too, and much longer.
Trevose road is good, but nowhere near as long.
Cobbs Creek Parkway has some really twisty sections also.
(all in the Phila area).

1. Provo Canyon - From Provo to Heber. Mainly a #2. And currently under some construction. Traffic can be a pain sometimes. It's about 20 miles in length.
2. Utah Highway 12 - A true nirvana of GT driving. It's got plenty of all three categories plus some breathtaking scenery. It's maybe 70-80 miles in length. Traffic is light to non-existent. I've never yet seen a police cruiser on this road. Simply spectacular.

I spent some time out in Ogden Utah a couple years back, and the entire time i was there i wished i had drove out in my 928 instead of flying.
The mountain roads surrounding Ogden are tremendous.

Mosquito Ridge - Foresthill, CA - definitely Cat3
Unfortunately, I moved before I had a chance to take the 928 on this road, but I had the Miata on there more than a few times
50 miles to the reservoir and back, but the best part is the first part of Mosquito Ridgee - 600+ turns in 13 miles...an up and back blast definitely made my arms tired! I wish I could go back there in the Porsche - light traffic (mostly sportbikes), especially on Sunday mornings (few cops - they come out late morning/early afternoon), perfect weather, and gorgeous scenery. Got to be careful though - many of those turns have no guardrail and its a few hundred feet of tumbling to the bottom of the canyon!

I used to work in Agoura Hills every month or two. I'd take the rental down those canyon roads. Mustang (older) was a disappointment. Volvo wagon was good. Ford focus was a blast.

Good call on Mosquito Ridge Road. I also like to return on Shake Ridge Road all the way back to Sutter Creek. To test top end Mormon Immigrant Trail from 88 to Sly Park Reservoir cannot be beat. We do those roads plus Wentworth Springs/Ice House all the time.

Keith may know as do others that one stretch of Hwy. 1 between Carmel and Big Sur is a borderline 3 on foggy days. You miss, and you swim home IF you survive the fall into the Pacific. No guard rails and you come around a corner and right into the path of a gawker tourista poke, and no run off save the cliff or rock on the side of the mountain. Slow down at night for sure. I dread that road at night in the fog. And in the rain the road may wash out and fall into the ocean at any time. Fun.
Another that can be a 3 is the Carmel Valley Road out towards Hwy. 101 beginning just past Carmel Valley Village. Best for bikes and that's what is usually on it. No wiggle room and they come around the corners on the yellow line where there is a yellow line. More fun. No need to go on a weight loss program; just take this road at speed.
Hwy. 70 outside of Denver between Rifle, Colorado and Denver is a great 1 and if it is raining, an even greater 2, because radar is useless in the rain. A must for 928 drives at speed.
There is another one that is a wobbler between a 2 and a 3: Mines Road south of Hollister, CA. Miles and miles of smiles into Nowhere-ville, CA. Jauder's beautiful C4S was totalled on this road one day as he followed right behind me through a semi tight corner and lost it into a tree. Spooky.
Another great road that is a 3 but very short unless it has been lengthened since I was last on it is Roller Coaster Road outside of Tucson, Arizona. E ticket ride for a few hairy minutes. Check your shocks before attempting this one. And I recall a few driveways so keep awake.
The road between Hwy. 101 south of Gilroy, CA and Watsonville, CA is fun; probably a 2.
Then there is the road along Calaveras Reservoir over which we all, (including Keith), passed during the last Devek Days fun run. A bit tight in spots with some interesting side effects like newly spread gravel to slow down traffic. A 2 to a 3 for sure. That road is in the east of Milpitas, CA.
Hwy 12 in Southern Utah was fun as described by Bigs. I enjoyed it until I nearly hit a monster deer who looked me in the eye as I swerved around him and gave him the finger for standing in the road during daylight hours. Varying landscape and terrain for miles. it is a 2 road.
Another nice road is just outside of and north of Yosemite Valley, CA and is the one major way out of there towards the east and Mono Lake. Another 2.
Then there are the roads in an unnamed state which are pedal to the metal ***** out straight as far as the eye can see and then some roads. I guess these would be called a catagory 1, because you just drop the hammer. Just watch out for birds. Whew. Splat. Can't see 'em coming. And watch out, 'cause you have been at redline for 5 miles and then all of a sudden a curvve jumps our at you and you realize there was a funny little corner advisory speed sign you just spotted that said "45" on it and you hope your tires bite. S**t !! Then it straightens out again for another infinite distance hidden by the mirages glimmering off of the road in the distance. Down goes the hammer again.

It is closed right now but Glendora Mountain road is a white knuckle ride. Right off the 57 where it meets the 210. Also Azusa canyon is good.

These are Category 2's that are long with not really any other vehicles on the road to speak of. There are stretches where you can keep your foot mashed on the floor and hit some serious speed. They have long sweepers and just plain fun country road driving. Several areas where the road tightens up and it's twistie time! Great roads!
Hwy 58-Runs between the Bakersfield area (south central valley) and Rancho Santa Margarita. Connects from Hwy 33 from Maricopa Hwy (166) from Interstate 5 just south of Bakersfield, runs to Rancho Santa Margarita out by the 101.
Hwy 25- South of Gilroy at the 101 in central california and Interstate 5 in the middle of nowhere. The route actually starts as Hwy 25 off the 101 and runs through Hollister and down the central valley. It connects to Hwy 198 which connects to Hwy 33. A must travel between northern and southern California. (This one is the one Ron mentioned)
...and Ron, that road between Yosemite and Mono I completely forgot about it. I did it in a Ford F150 and it is just a spectacular drive through an ancient valley formed by glaciers from the Ice age.

I guarantee you that there are still folks that are lost at the bottom of some of those canyons. Stetches for many many miles! Borders between a 2 and a 3 depending on how you drive it.

How about Hwy 17 between San Jose and Santa Cruz? I think that could be a 2 or 3 depending on how you go at it. I also like Hwy 50 between S. Lake Tahoe and Sacramento. That can be a real blast to drive if the traffic is lite and the "man" is not lurking around.

Hwy 12 from Lewston, Id all the way to Missoula, MT Has all three catagories. There is a 67 mile stretch right in the middle that is total white knuckle experience.

For a real hoot though... Jay Wellwood had us storming down some of the tightest excellent condition 2 lane stuff in Arkansas at the 1st shARKANSAS Frenzy a few yeras ago.
I never saw such a collection of road signs, 15mph -my ***- multiple-switchbacks, all manner of grades, banked and off camber stuff ... you discover what a handler your sHARk really is and appreciate the wide torque curve of the engine. I had to treat the 3spd auto like a standard, 1st and second were heavily utilized not to mention all the brake dust in the air from the sHARKs up ahead.
