Best Roads In America for the 928

Well drat,
Thought I was gonna be able to add sand canyon/little Tejunga, ya beat me to it! Used to go up there for target practicing.... I know two ways from the San Fernando Valley, over fire break roads back into there... Starts in Sylmar... NOT sports car friendly! High clearance required!
Keith,
you mentioned the Angeles Crest hwy, finally, surprised me that wasn't in your first post....
Four decades + ago, my father teaching me to drive the 356A, on the end of the Angles Crest area, out in the desert end, there are so many little swervy little roads, before you get far enough out to get to the Pearblossom hwy (138), cats 2/3 at speed.
At the "top" of 14, the antelop valley fwy, as it drops over into the Mojave desert, there is an exit. Get off there, and find your way south, up into the mountains. There is a somewhat scenic road that eventually drops you into Big Tejunga canyon, after many miles. Access to Angeles Crest is possible from this road.... Cat 2+?
So MANY more I cannot remember....
My Father was a wanderer, loved to go driving almost anywhere! Sheephearder "trails" in Idaho, many times we got bogged down in spring-fed "divots" in these "trails"! ALWAYS an adventure.
Nobody says anything about the back country roads in Idaho.... But some of them, in the middle of nowhere, going nowhere....WOW! Scenery, and curves! Lots of places look like those pics previously shown! I miss the west!
Once they got I-15 put through the mountains between "Lost Wages", NV., and St. George Utah, THAT mountain pass is a very high speed gallop through wide banking echoing turns! LATE night fun! Just be aware that th'fuzz do appear at times.....
And the road from I-15, up to Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument, in Utah. THAT'S a hillclimb! Watch out for cyclists!
Similar fwy south of Charleston, W.Va., I-77, but with the trees and greenery, no echoing off the hard mountain sides. As this is a highly traveled road, th'fuzz are out and about, and hiding on overpasses and blind areas. At times during the day, truckers are to be wary of, MANY of them on this road, heavy loads forcing them out of their lanes, while they're trying to make time.... I once heard this "new" fwy took a lot of time out of crossing those hills.... Up to four times the travel time? But, oh what fun in my shark! This is the way for me, to get to and from SITM!
And then there is the TIGHT little road from little Switzerland, just off the BRP. Been trying to get some interest from some people at SITM, and Herr Kempf has shown a bit. I'll take him and any others interested over there, and see what they think.... 1st and 2nd gear for the manual sharks, mostly, I think... This road was shown to me, by a fellow AJS & Matchless owner. He lives in the area, and knows a lot about the roads down there... WOW! ALMOST as good as SoCal was..... Maybe I'll see if'n I can break him loose, and get other ideas....

Actually, just about any state hiway in the northwest quadrant of Arkansas will vary between category 1 and category 3, depending on the traffic. Being a poor state, we can't afford massive earth reshaping, except for the Interstates, so our roads run on top of the ridges and on bottom of the river valleys. The fun parts are the transitions between the two.
The problem with the well-known routes, like Hiway 7 (Scenic Seven) and 23 (only the part between 16 and Ozark is called the Pig Trail) is that they are well known, well traveled by tourists, and, for us, relatively well patrolled as a way to augment tourist income. I call Hiway 16 the roofline of the Ozarks, since pretty much everything south of it drains into the Arkansas River, and everything north of it drains into the White. From 16, you can spin off side trips on the 3-digit hiways where the real fun is, like 327 and 123. With a little luck, you can drive most of the day and see maybe a half-dozen vehicles. Be polite to the locals; they live here and you're just a visitor.
If an old red and black Ninja suddenly appears in your rearviews, just hold your line. I'll be gone soon.

Last Wednesday, I was out doing Mulholland and we stopped at our usual rest area. While we were chatting, we hear something fierce coming down the twisties and we almost all simultaneously say "exotic". Just before our eyes, a Carrera GT blows past us in a fury of sound and style. We all looked at each other and I said we should follow it. So, we all jump in our cars and start moving. I ended up being "first" in my lowly 325IS and my passenger said "Hey, let the Evo go first... Actually, nevermind, the Evo will pass you". So, I proceeded to make it down as fast as possible and my passenger swears he caught a glimpse of the CGT, but I never actually saw it. After a few minutes, I pull over at another rest point so everyone can catch up. My friend Jonathan in his E36-M3 comes to a halt with steam coming out of his hood and an unhappy look on his face. We find that his upper radiator hose poppped off while pursuing the CGT. A couple guys hopped into my car and we went to get some water to fill it back up. Just as I got to the end of Mulholland, we saw the CGT waiting at a stop light and the guy gave us a thumbs up
I was also out Friday night doing the Latigo run with a few friends. It was a little sandy, but tons of fun! We then hit up Mulholland, then hit the 101 and went home.
Does anyone here make regular use of the twities? I personally hit the twisties at least once a week (usually twice). We've got a nice little group of 4-5 cars that go regularly (2x E36 M3s, 350Z, RSX, Evo, and my 325is). I'd be happy to keep interested parties "in the loop", provided you can put up with us younger "kids"

S6 and S7 from I15 ( Escondido) north of San Diego, up to the top of Palomar Mountain will give you a good work out, especially when the super bikes are out on the upper stretch, and they will take you like you are standing still!

sounds like fun mike! iirc, the socal 928 gang is starting to get together on sun am's at the roasters on mulholland... would probably be a few 928er's interested... I keep waiting for a fun canyon ride after our PCA meeting in lancaster... 1st sat am of each month/details on the socal board
this week my old gal is going in for her 1st tune up since the motor was done (tbelt tension, oil, etc)... probably be a week or two as there are a couple of items it "needs" (custom lsd installed, bb throttle body, etc)... should be ready to shred again/even more in a couple of weeks... and summer is just round the corner - yeehaaa!

tons of fun! I can't believe I didn't start doing this sooner. I'm gonna head over to the socal928 board and see where those crazy guys meet up

Can't believe none of the SoCal guys have mentioned Palomar Mountain! Can't remember the exact road name but I think it's S. Ridge Rd. Guaranteed to bake the brakes on the way down, never came off that mountain without a complete adrenaline rush and sweating from the workout. Best part is that other tourists and travelers must know the car guys go up there because they all make every effort to get out of the way on turnoffs.
Ortega Hwy was also a great favorite, especially Saturday mornings when I was driving to Crystal Cove for the GTG's. Just wish the drivers used the turnoffs more frequently.

Rob..what ever happened to our plan to launch the 928's on the landing strip at the AD Airport???? I want to peg the needle!!!!!!!
Michael, I responded to your post on the SOCAL board. It's hit and miss right now. I tend to get my game face on in the twisties and just do not want to do that with my GTS...I am a ***** when it comes to that car! As soon as the 82 is up and running again, I will join you guys. However, there is no shortage of people ready to roast the so Cal canyons.
Afshin it's tough to get those "Sandy Eggo" guys out of the house! I have tried for years man! As far as the Ortega Hwy just north in OC, I ran it twice and just don't see the thrill in that drive. Sorry, I would say it's me, but 3 other 928's that I ran with yawned their way through it.
Come on out to the next Sharktoberfest and see what we call a "Fun Run" !

Keith,
I think I liked Ortega because of the destination. I'd usually stop at the Starbucks for a couple shots of espresso at the end of the run just before going north on the PCH to Crystal Cove. Very CA I guess.
So where exactly do you guys run in that neck of the woods anyways? I've done Mullholland (sp?) which was fun but just a touch too tight IMHO.
Mt Palomar was far and away my favorite. I can remember coming down the backside going into Julian and stopping at the bottom, the brake pads were always smoking and popping at the end of this run. Can also remember many cooling system catastrophes up that way, I guess the elevation, heat and obvious abuse brought out any weak points in a car.

Bigs... SERIOUSLY! I WANT that road!!!
Afshin...Mulholland is a good example of the kinds of roads out here. They vary, some tighter, some looser. As stated before, any canyon in the Santa Monica mountains north of Sunset and south of Pleasant Valley road in Camarillo is a story unto itself. Now we also have the mountains the seprate the high deserts from the lower valley's...Palmdale to Sun Valley, Pasadena to Wrightwood, Redlands to Big Bear. We did a nice run in 2005 for SF on Rte 18 up along Rim of the World. If I may say so myself, this was a road designed for a 928!!! Some others here may agree. There are just so many darn roads of all kinds in this part of southern California. Tell you what...go back a few pages on this thread and you will see a lot of the greats roads noted in this part of the country.
