MBMB: That was me being quoted by Sniper. I preferred not to name the state. Not too difficult to think of it. Hit a bird at about 135 dead on in the center of the windshield and thought it might be a bit tense, but it didn't penetrate. Just a splat.

You're a lucky guy, Ron. In the 50's, an MB 300SL navigator was killed by a buzzard that came through the windshield in the Carrera Mexicana, iirc. Faster than you were going, and zopilotes are big birds.
Hmmmm ... which state? West of the Mississippi, east of the Sierras, there are lots of 'em like that. I can recall roads like that in Nevada, Cal, New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, OK and even Kansas.

I'll never tell. I've said too much already. Must be something I ate and it affected my memory. I must have imagined it. I admit to nothing, I tell you.....nothing.
Actually, in seriousness, it was a rather scary experience and I made it a point to avoid that particular road in the future. The birds eat the bugs that are killed by the cars and drop on the roadway and the birds are feasting on the bugs until the last minute when they rise up just high enough to be hit by the cars. Nailed several of them, one stuck in the headlight which was in the up position. And one under the wiper blade. They just appear out of nowhere. I doubt I will ever take that route again for that reason. That is also the reason I try to never drive at night across unfamiliar territory.......not after having totaled one car when I hit a deer. Too many critters....and bears....running around at night. I stop and sleep when it gets dark. No use pushing my luck.

The beauty of this ramp is there is no opposing traffic to cross into my lane, or intersections for a car to pop out in front of me. Just uninterupted straightway.

#1 - Arkansas Highways 16 & 23, from I-40 to Fayetteville; the "Pig Trail".
A beautiful scenic drive on two lane highways through the Ozark National Forest, this trip offers a litle bit of everything - fast straightaways, high speed sweeping curves, tight curves with deep braking, and more than a few hairpins with a high pucker factor. After the opening of a new interstate from I-40 to Fayetteville, this road has become even more fun: less slow traffic = more speed!
These roads were even featured on a Porsche "best driving roads" commercial several years ago!
#2 - Highway 154 ( I think), North out of Santa Barbara.
Just my top two...
