Default What would happen if you left a blue paper shop towel in the intake and drove it?

Well, the reason I ask is after having my injectors cleaned, there is a loud sucking sound. I have checked all the vacuum lines and i know I stuffed a blue shop rag in the intake to try and keep things out, but then i just replace the mass on top of it for better protection against rodents and such. I remember taking the rag out at one time cause i noticed it had oil on it. Just not sure if it's in there or not. I've driven probably 30 miles or so with the sucking sound and it seems to run fairly well. I've taken the middle of the intake off, but could not tell if there was a paper towel in one of the runners. Any ideas what would happen if there is a paper towel in there? Would it make this awfull sucking sound? My friend says it would really run bad and i would have definitely noticed it. 84 Euro LH. thanks.

It isn't going to come out on its own. Take the intake apart and check if it's in there. While you've got it apart, clean the throttle body (with throttle body cleaner not carb cleaner) and check all your vaccum lines. My throttle body and intake plenum were both filled with oil sludge.

It could conceievably get sucked into the chambers, but i doubt it.

Try one of those flexible claw grabber pick up tool thingys in each intake runner i guess.

probably get stuck at the TB, as it would have to pass through one of the sides. its not going to see much moisture, so it will stay in tact. at that point, it just acts as restriction, and should actually run fine. remember, throttle means choke. at idle and part throttle, the throttle plate is mostly closed anyway. if it is in the plennum , it would probably be sucked into a runner, but dont know if it could fit down a runner to the valve under vacuum.

Mark has probably won races with blue shop towels crammed down the intake. Nevertheless I'd try to get it out of there.

I have witnessed a shop towell, yes, cloth towell, get sucked through the blower and out of the exhaust pipes on a top fuel dragster motor. They stuffed the towell in the blower scoop because they had the dragster at a car show and didn't want anyone throwing debris in the intake. Well, they forgot to remove it before they started the motor. It came out like cloth confetti from the exhaust pipes and the motor did not even hiccup. I thought that it would surely damage the motor but the owner did not even bat an eye and said that the towell would do nothing to the motor.

With a T/F car, the towell would have gone thru the blower first - which would make an EXCELLENT shredder (driven by about 7000 HP)

In a 928, if it actually got to the engine, I would be afraid that it would hang up a valve.......

If you can't reach it with a mechanic's "claw", then the ONLY safe alternative, is to remove manifold and find it....and make sure you find ALL of it......

You'll have to loosen the injectors, but they don't need to be removed per se. You'll see when you get in there. But you might not have to take off the arms of the spider. Loosen the 8 donut connectors between the legs and the body. Slide them on to the legs, then pull the body. You should be able to see if the towel has been sucked into any of the arms or if it's hanging in the body. 10 minute job tops!

"10 minute job tops!"

LOL....a bit optomistic probably, but not too far off.

I'd plan on an hour or so(odds are the rubber tubes are siezed in place and will need some coaxing to get free)...and then while you're in there, you might as well change all the brittle and cracked vacuum lines anyway....and replace the spider to plenum couplers if they're whooped too.

10 minutes... unless you have an EGR pipe, then make it 20.

well, i've removed the center portion (body) twice so far and it's difficult to tell if anything is down there. i've tried shoving various things down the runners to feal for the possible rag. I've tied a nut on a piece of fishing line, and kind of jigged it around there to see if i could feal a rag. so far, i'm not sure. so what i think i need to do to be certain is remove the legs from the cam housing. it takes about 10 minutes for me to remove the intake tubes, lol.

Yes thinking about the twin screw propeller action it would chop it good.
I am not sure if it would make it past my intercooler though.
Wow what a great example of another postive reson to install a S/C of your choice. To protect your engine from unwanted debris.

Jyoon, if a shop rag was in one of the runners i'd think it would be pretty obvious with the center plenum off using the gravity nut/string method you described.

Just let the thing go(not the string of course, lol), if you dont hear a 'clank' when the nut hits bottom at the end of each runner, there's a rag in there.
