Well in my case I have silverstars 100/80W in the headlamps (with ROW electric adjusters), 6000K HID fogs (with reflector adaptations & ROW relay config*) and silverstar 100W in the aux beams. Frankly to me the lighting is perfectly good enough for any situation - it is well aimed & high/low beams are perfectly functional and all the colors match very well.
I don't plan to install HID's in the headlamps since to me its still too much of a compromise optically...
* you need this to avoid the fogs cycling off when high beams go on

I doubt it.
I have Silverstars in my 928 headlights & upgraded to Silverstar Ultras in my Explorer. There's a noticeable difference over the standard Silverstars, but it's not dramatic.
Philips makes a bulb called +80 Extreme that is a good bit brighter than the Silverstar Ultra. I have one on my touring bike. I don't believe that they're DOT legal, so probably can't get them through most parts houses in the US.
The Ultras have about 1/2 the life of the standard Halogens at more than 2x the price, so it's a matter of benefit vs. cost.

Ed's writeup is excellent, but that was four years ago and I think the HID kits have evolved to a point where installation is now much easier. The small digital ballasts that are now available are very easy to mount below the headlight assembly, there's no ignitor to mount near the bulb, and no cutting or soldering if you use the stock wiring, they just plug right in to the existing bulb plug.
If you get a HID kit where the bulb doesn't have an end shield, as I did, you will have reflections from the shield built into the headlight which can send some light up off the lower half of the reflector and cause glare. I installed an additional lower shield to solve this issue. (There's a writeup I did on this).
I also ran into the issue of sealing around the bulb, since the rubber boots don't really fit right, and haven't solved it yet.
Still love my HIDs, and never get flashed (by oncoming cars)

A few weeks ago, I installed the 928 Specialists "H4 BI-XENON High/Low Beam Kit". I'm really happy with the results, so I figured I'd share the positive experience and pass along what I hope is some useful information.

I also told Dave Roberts that I'd write up the installation procedure I used, so that's available now as a 20-page Acrobat (PDF) document. Seems kind of long, I know, but it includes tons of photos and details of some modifications I made.

Holy cow, this is ancient history!
The HIDs have long since (4+ years ago) been replaced by LED H4 bulbs (which led to a bunch of other work; see Building a replacement cap for sealing headlamps after converting to HID or LED).
