H4 HID Conversion Kit Installed; Writeup Now Available
I don't plan to install HID's in the headlamps since to me its still too much of a compromise optically...

I have Silverstars in my 928 headlights & upgraded to Silverstar Ultras in my Explorer. There's a noticeable difference over the standard Silverstars, but it's not dramatic.
Philips makes a bulb called +80 Extreme that is a good bit brighter than the Silverstar Ultra. I have one on my touring bike. I don't believe that they're DOT legal, so probably can't get them through most parts houses in the US.
The Ultras have about 1/2 the life of the standard Halogens at more than 2x the price, so it's a matter of benefit vs. cost.
If you get a HID kit where the bulb doesn't have an end shield, as I did, you will have reflections from the shield built into the headlight which can send some light up off the lower half of the reflector and cause glare. I installed an additional lower shield to solve this issue. (There's a writeup I did on this).
I also ran into the issue of sealing around the bulb, since the rubber boots don't really fit right, and haven't solved it yet.
Still love my HIDs, and never get flashed (by oncoming cars)

I also told Dave Roberts that I'd write up the installation procedure I used, so that's available now as a 20-page Acrobat (PDF) document. Seems kind of long, I know, but it includes tons of photos and details of some modifications I made.
Beautiful work Ed........

The HIDs have long since (4+ years ago) been replaced by LED H4 bulbs (which led to a bunch of other work; see Building a replacement cap for sealing headlamps after converting to HID or LED).
