The pin in the middle of the "rivet" pushes the 4 prongs out to engage them in the hole. I think if you pushed it in, you would either loose the pin in the rocker panel, or it wouldn't help. I think GENTLY prying it up works best. Then you can pull the pin out the top prior to re-installation. YMMV.

A lot of those plastic rivits have a thin section so that if you push in on the center a bit it allows the prongs to come together so you can pull it out. But don't push it too far or it will fall out.
However, I don't know about the one in question.

I pulled mine out as per Andrew's indication. Came out easily.
One note to add: the white buttons that are left on the car once you slide the sill towards the interior to remove it, can easily be removed from the car by turning them 90 degrees. They pull right out.
You can then slide the pins back on the sill piece, in their slots. Once the pins are back on the sill, the sill can be reinstalled by alinging the pins in their hole and pushing straight down. No sliding necessary. This makes the alignment of the light strip much easier.

Great tip, Paul! I'll see if I can edit my earlier post and add it.

Seems like everyone likes the idea. This could be helpful along with the great work done here already ;

Hey all,
I just completed my own lighted sill project. I took the opportunity to customize a little bit
I'm very happy with how it turned out. It does give the car an "old world" quality vibe. And of course ties in with the rest of the project.
The sills were part of the project from the beginning. I just didn't plan on the lighted part.
Thanks again to Randy for bringing the subject up again and to Andrew for his excellent writeup.

Wow! That's some serious work there! Would love to see it in person someday.
