I was watching that episode of Top Gear last week (the one with the POS 928). One of the segments was about the new Mercedes urban assault vehicle.
Clarkson pointed out the door sill insignia that illuminates, and I thought that should be something we could incorporate fairly easily in our cars.
I think I've seen previous discussions on this, but can't recall if anyone has actually done it.
Seems it would be a simple matter of placing an electrolume sheet (whatever that glow gauge stuff is called) under the clear insignia, and wiring it to the door switch.

A simple search on "door sill light" comes up with:

Oddly enough, Randy has this to say at the time:

I did this in 2000 on my GTS in yellow, there are some old posts on it but photo's are long gone... can repost if interested. The following supplier sells kits small that will do one GTS logo - too small for a 928 logo - large will do at least one 928 logo (maybe 2 haven't tried that - anyone?).
All Electronics Corp (no affliation)
Look also for the 12v inverter kit - you need this - I recommend 2 (1 for each side)...
Inverter you need (X2)
just connect the 12v input to the interior lights. I recommend laminating the EL strips to seal the edges - else they suck up water and portions will go dead at the edges. The small kit here has colored filters (red/yellow/blue/green...) the basic EL strips are bright white when on but a pale pink when off (not a good look) the larger size does not come with filters - use modelling self stick material in appropriate colors from a hobby shop instead.
Other possible suppliers are DigiKey, Mouser Electronics.
This is very easy!

OK, Alan - so what do I need to buy to do my 2 GTS insignias? I want it to look white in the daytime, and bluish-white when illuminated.

Randy,
Get the 2 small kits and 2 inverters. Try it without anything on top first - you can just slip it under - you probably need the blue filter or maybe some thin white paper laminated on top of the blue filter... Kinkos can laminate - but I had my own - the heat & flexing does not hurt the EL strip. (ElectroLuminescent). I soldered on very thin very flexible wires to mine before I laminated - you have to figure out how to do this bit somehow.
I just left 2 connector pins on the end facing the front of the car and routed the thin wires across the threshold to the panel next to the handbrake or amp cover plate where the inverters can happily fit. These output several hundred volts but ultra low current (think like static electricity) so you don't want them snaking around the car... possible RF noise rather than dangerous...
I needed to trim out a section around 1 corner for where the "plasic rivet thing" in the sill plate goes close to the logo - you can just cut the EL - anywhere. Get the required shape using a bit of colored card first. I used double sided tape to stick the EL in-place - once the sill is back down it won't move.

I saw the g-wagen with the lit-up door sill and was reminded of the thread that shane found. Looks pretty cool. The routing of the wires sounds like a pita.
