Default Rear hatch shock mount broke

The ball on the shock mount for the rear hatch broke off / rusted. Any body have a fix for this? The post is still there, just the ball broke off. This is the one on the body not the hatch.

This happend to my 82 also. I had no idea what to do, but while at a parts store (pep boys or something) I noticed a rack of shocks and one included a threaded fastener with a ball end on it that looked to be the right size. So I purchased it, drilled a hole in the middle of the broken ball, tapped it and put in the fastner. 15 years, 100K miles later and two sets of shocks later it is still working fine. Perhaps someone here can point you towards a more reliable source for the ball end fasteners.

This book contains a complex fix -

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846

but I can't find written out on the web anywhere.

A useful reminder for the rest of us to clean and lube the ***** every so often!

Brad,
I have the book that Dr. Mark references.
I will find the article and copy it for you.

Roger, sounds like we have another fix for this weekend. I'll get that copy from you when I drop off the Top Gear video.

My old wernch put a small plate with ball on mine. He riveted in there. That's been back in '91, has held up ever since, no rusting.

An auto parts store near me sold a package with an assortment of different sized *****. They are threaded so all you would have to do is figure out how to get access and get a nut on it. I believe it was Holley or Edelbrock that sold the *****.
