Let me begin by saying that Mr. Lexse is awesome guy. Mr. Lexse was trying to get a group buy together some time back to have cam gears re-hard anodized. Everything looked good on paper.
Unfortunately the place that he had identified was supposed to check the gears for compatibility with their process. Unfortunately, they did not
. After bead blasting the gears, they put them in some type of pre-wash. As Lex told me, "They reacted violently." That was an understatement.
Obviously they were a total loss. Can you believe they sent these back instead of a check? Luckily, Lex was able to procurr a dry-film lubricant. You'll have to ask him how it's applied. I recevied the recoated gears from yesterday, and they look awesome.
They now look like the one on the left.

Yeah. They DO look lighter now. Less rotating mass and all...

There HAS to be a way those can be used in some garage-furniture or decoration.
Either that, or call them Salvador Dali gears and eBay them!

Put this under the "I could be wrong column", but,
SFL, SFD and all of the Dry Film Lubricants I have come across or used are aerosol or paste's.
I'm not sure if the suspension fluid in the aerosol simply drys and the dry lubricant remains , or what, but that's my impression. I use it a lot on various road grader/maintainer parts.
In the Army I used SFD for tool box inventory and turn in. Sprayed on old hand files made it them look like new and the finish would not scratch off with a fingernail. Unfortuneatly, due to the Film filling in the cutting groove the files were useless until wire wheeled.
Did I miss something? Was there some humor involved? If so, soooorry!
Due to the TYPE OF WEAR it won't do much good in a cam gear application -for very long-.
I don't believe any of the dry films can be applied as a LONG TERM, 'hard face', nor do I think they can be powder-coat applied.
