Default crank bolt wants to stay put

No leverage is moving that f---er. I bought a four foot pipe to extend my breaker bar and I repeatedly sprayed it down with liquid wrench, but if it moves, its taking the rest of the engine with it.

So...power tools?

One thread suggested using the starter motor...but that would require putting some parts back on.

Wouldn't it?

Air wrench......if you can get it in there, if not you will have to remove the radiator. Having a 5 speed negates the need for a fly wheel lock.....which you may want to purchase. They are n ot expensive.

Yes a 3/4" impact gun will do it. I had one that was extra stubborn. Even my 1/2" impact would not do it.

How do you propose to reinstall the nut at the WSM required torque without a flywheel lock? Seems like you need a plan.

Most just use the WSM procedure instead.

flywheel lock works best. too much compliance with it in gear.
air tool is a snap. thats why ive been using my NOS for hard to break loose bolts. (mostly for air in the tires and at home. ) a 10lbs bottle lasts all season. nice thing, is that you can crank the pressure up to line pressure limits (say 200psi) and that 1/2 " drive just pounds it off in a couple of hits. (machine gun noise , rap rap rap rap, bliiiiing.......!)

You need the flywheel lock and a 3/4 inch breaker bar (I used a Harbor Freight $45 bargain but effective 3/4 inch socket set) with a Home Depot pipe extension. It will give.

Oh, flywheel lock is in there all right... When I said it takes the engine with it, I mean the whole block moves on its mounts.

If going up from 1/2" to 3/4" is all it takes...

The first time I loosened mine, I had to use a 5-foot long Home Depot pipe extension; after two loud popping noises, it finally relented.

Yes, 3/4 inch should do it. This what I have used on several cars, with a 4-5 foot pipe over the ratchet.

I really need to hit that store more often, they've got all kinds of crazy, yet useful stuff. I just wish I'd seen that before I bought some of my other tools. Ah well, they'll probably all come in useful eventually. Thanks for the advice all!

Flint:

I had a MAJOR problem on a used engine that I purchased. I was bending 4 foot extensions over a 3/4 inch bar. I tried my impact...but I only have a small compressor in my garage. I finally heated the bolt slowly with a small butane torch and then would give the bolt end a moderate rap with a medium size hammer, this didn't work either. I then alternated between heating and packing the pulley end with ice. After about 6 hours of steady work it finally came loose. WHEEEW!

Just take your time.

Regards,

Ken

I used the flywheel lock, 3/4" breaker bar, and a 4' length of pipe. All I got was a "broken" breaker bar. My second alternative worked just fine.

*The good news - Harbor Freight replaced the "broken" breaker bar.

I bought the long 3/4" breaker bar at Harbor Freight and applied pressure via another floor jack. The steady slow pressure loosened what my 58 yr old skeleton could not. Leverage is the secret of old age.
