Find somebody with a Porsche or 928 tension tool ASAP and have them check it out.

What $270 "kit" would that be?

The PO of my car took it to Mercedes mechanics for service - after all, it has a Mercedes transmission, so it must be a Mercedes with a Porsch body, right?

Well, those guys charged the PO a lot of money, leaving him with the feeling that he was getting good work done. But they never figured out why the timing belt light kept coming on everytime. He took it back twice and was assured everything was fine.

Well, the PPI showed the belt was too lose, so no problem - at least I thought. I left the car with the mechanic to fix a few other things and tighten the belt. Well, after tightening the belt a screeching noise developed, so I asked to have the whole TB/WP job redone. First they found a bearing missing in one of the rollers, then they could not get the WP off - the wrong bolts had been jammed into the block.

This was then fixed, and I have not had any problems since. But it was a significant expense I had not expected, either. Well, it was less than destroying the engine...

Leif at Autowerks NW charges around $1500 for a timing belt, water pump, and a full once over on the car. Even better - Leif pays attention to details - such as "Oh by the way your drivers mirror was loose, but I adjusted it - no cost".

Expensive is relative too - I have a Mercedes and the parts for that are much more expensive than the 928.

If I were buying another 928 I would talk to the local PACNW 928 group - They know most of the cars in the area and have a ton of insight into pre purchase inspections. Then again - the message board here is a great resource also - not too many 928's out there that one of the members doesn't know about.

I'm thinking that I now have the most expensive 928 in the country -

1983 Kiln Red 928S Purchase price 3 years ago $5K.
Approx $30K in upgrades and add ons - well ok.. it's now a track car and 1/2 S4 and 1/2 Euro.
The biggest expensive though out right that few of us think about is justifying the $$$$ to the wife.

So........

928 $40K
New house for the wife $360K
Wife found out about the racing fund - $14K
TOTAL COST FOR A 928 TRACK CAR- $414,000.00

3 hours on the Track - PRICELESS!!!!

Wow! I never realized. I was thinking I'd do a few minor upgrades to my '85 and get it out on the track once or twice a year for some track days, maybe a DE here and there. Pop a chip in there, an X-pipe, just the basics.

Hmmm, I didn't realize the new house for the wife was part of the deal. Just got a pug for the wife and kids, thought that was going to hold them over for a while...

Hey Woodsrider - we're going to be neighbors soon! The new house is on Lake Kayak (Just outside of Duvall) - great place for a 928 Caravan stopover, and barbecue..

I do not consider used 911's expensive either, so I guess I do not know how to answer that.

To do a 944 clutch you rip almost everything off the underside, total nighmare.
Clutch on a 911 you remove the motor / trans.

Every Porsche has quirks, all are expensive to fix compared to "regular" cars.

Very cool Chuck! Where is Lake Kayak? Don't recall hearing of it before.

And no doubt. The Duvall area would make a great stop over for a gathering of the sharks. Lots of fun roads out this way. I was actually thinking about trying to put something together, once I get a few things done on my '85 (windshield, frt brakes, wheels). Maybe a tech day, or just a drive and bbq.

Lets keep in touch and put something together for the PacNW'ers. -Ed

ps: what was this thread originally about anyway....?

Big garage, lots of tools you say? Ha ha, well alright then! Let me know when you're settled in here in Duvall and we'll get to meet. -Ed

ps: Cherry Valley Rd - one of my favorites, its the "long way home" for me. Heh heh...

Would somebody please point out to me the cars that have cheap parts, everytime someone talks about Porsche's (that doesn't own) they talk about the high price of parts. Anyone priced any Japanese parts lately, maybe they are cheap for Kia's and Hyundai's. American car parts are no bargain although I will admit some electical components for american cars are less than German. And Audi parts (especially if from the dealer) make Porsche parts look downright reasonable. A TB/WP job on my '97 Mitsubishi Montero is the same ~$1000 as it is for the 928 and I dont have to worry about cooling system at all on the 911. I spend less on repairs for my Porsche's than ex-wife does for her Dodge minivan.
