Default Interested in purchasing a 928 S4 but my (Seattle) mech wont touch one!

I am interested in purchasing a 928 S4 but my Porsche mechanic wont touch one! Are they good cars to buy with 40k-60k miles? I know they are one of the most expensive of the Porsche road cars to fix but for the most part all of my Porsches have been trouble free is this true for the 928? What should I watch out for? And does anyone know a good Porsche mechanic willing to work on 928s in the Seattle area? I have been going to Akers Porsche and VW since the 80s and they have been excellent and are suppose to be one of the best in the nation but they have stopped working on 928s.

Time for a new mechanic then.

Lots o' 928ers in the Seattle area - they'll be able to suggest a good 928-savvy shop.

Oh, and good luck in your S4 search and welcome to the 928 forum.

Food for thought...

...people don't stop working on 928's because they are supposedly the best in the nation.
...most shops charge the same rate whether its' a 928, 911 or 944... some techs know their stuff better than others and don't take as much to complete a job. Unless it's BS book rate.
...928's are just as easy to work on for a truely qualified tech as any other make/model
...abused cars take more to straighten out than well sorted cars.
...Sounds like you need a good reference for a knowledgable shop in the Seatle area.
... don't worry, be happy

Yep, it doesn't matter whether that mech's problem is snobbery, ignorance, fear, etc.... if you can't do the work yourself there are plenty of mechs who can. Find another one. Doesn't mean you have to quit taking your other cars to this guy, but with that kind of attitude you don't want him touching your 928!

928s are pretty straight forward cars to work on.

Your mechanic is a wuss.

I helped one of the posters at another board(928s4vr) buy a shark, she knew NOTHING about cars.

Her last project was the installation of a new B2 piston in her transaxle, unassisted.

You can do it!!!

It is a honest mechanic who admits that he really does not KNOW 928s or like to work on them. The really bad mechanics often THINK they can work on a 928. I get amused when I read a shop sign which states something like "Specialists in foriegn and domestic cars" ... What other kinds are there ?

How come 928s are so cheap then? They were twice the price of a 911 new. Arent parts expensive for these cars?

I talked to my mechanic about 928s and he said they are great cars (he has 3) but the parts are very expensive and if anything breaks its going to be very expensive to fix he said he has stopped working on them because he is tired of extremely angry owners yelling at him for the repair costs. He says most people buy them because they have great preformance and are very inexpensive to buy but the reality is that they were a $100k car and they dont realize the running costs are about the same for a Ferrrari. Like timeing belts are about $6k to do properly. He says he has had too many owners not being able to pay the repair costs.

So I think I am going to look for another car maybe a Alfa Romeo GTV-6. I hear those are fun to drive.

Unless you are willing to do your own work, his assesment is sad, but true...

The parts aren't horribly expensive, but the labor can really add up.

Your mechanic is a bit overpriced. I think it's normally $1500-2000 to have a shop do it.

On a 928? $6k? That's a load of crap. How many weeks labor is that? I don't have any TB receipts handy, but it's nothing like that. $6k is what it may cost you if you don't have the TB done in a timely fashion. And I haven't seen many of those (but they are ugly).

Call Leif:
