Default 928 racing at Thunderhill --- SCCA Race update 6-10-05

Another HOT weekend at Thunderhill.

4:25am left my house with 700lbs packed in the Holbert 928S4. 7am arrive at the track, after doing about 10 3rd gear 60-100mph (3600rpm to 5900rpm) runs along the way. about 7 seconds with the extra weight, and in 4th gear, 9.3 seconds. (gearing discussion anyone).

anyway, missed qualifying on friday due to work, so started at the back. (big mistake) almost got hit several times and one of the more stock Evo 4x4's thought that instead of letting a 6 second a lap faster car go by, he would go off road and pepper me with rocks (big rocks) . blew out a front fog, driving light lense, and poked a hole in my radiator!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1 lap before finish, red light came on and i went into the pits. panic, as this was my ride home too, talked to a bunch of folks that didnt think aluminum radiators could fixed. (well, not in that country town anyway) so i used some JB weld. GREAT STUFF. Pitched off the tube, cleared out the fins and put in 4-5 different layers over 3 hours. hard as a rock, it worked for qualifying for the next race. also used a set of used hoosiers that were the best ive used in years. ran a 2:02.2 in qual, for a best time there too! . Put on the toyos as im saving those hoosiers for Laguna. was gridded up in the first row in 2nd, with a supercharged S2000, Acura type R with RSX speedToruing engine, and a mustang, vet and another S2000 with a bunch of miatas, rx7s, etc behind. pushed the car pretty hard to keep up with the 1:59.9 best time of the Mullerized evo 4x4 (very fast!)
Jb held, ran a 2:02.3 on a 2 year old set of toyos RA1s and they are still working!!!! (although im sure with that adrenaline, i would have been 2:01.xx with the hoosiers.

the 4x4 Evo had quite an operation there. 3 big vehicles, a full crew, a back up car, etc. It would have made RacersGroup proud.

Laguna on August 7th

the radiator seems to be fixed. that stuff is amazing. However i may have hurt the water pump. car runs fine, no overheat, but if you put stethascope on the waterpump casting, its sounds like rattling of a ball bearing or something. (not good) cant hear it just by listening in, but as you rev the engine, with the scope, it sounds really bad) im wondering if i damaged the bearing and the impeller is loose and digging into my block? (doest sound like grinding, just a bad angry rattle! but only with the stethascope) running the water pump at 6krpms for 4 laps and no water, or reduced water, could that have done it in?

Mark,

Great weekend! Are you going to Laguna with POC next month? Both Mark A and I will be there.

When is the Laguna POC? The 7th conflicts with DEVEK Days, but being that is Sunday, perhaps the DEVEK Days ride can head to Laguna! I'd like to be there cheering you guys on.

Since water doesn't lube the pump and it probably doesn't need much cooling, I wouldn't think running it without water would be a big problem. Have you stethescoped it before and not heard the noise?

Why do you have the tow hook in? Race requirement?

yes, and painted red or yellow.

i use a yellow strap on the rear, very light and strong enough attached to the chassis, as my rear bumper is removed and thats where the old hook went.
