My wife left Wednesday for a writer's weekend in Gulf Shores. She is supposed to help Roland and Judy Martin take a bunch of sports writers fishing to try out her products (Spro and Gamakatsu fishing tackle and hooks) Friday and Saturday.

Well - we had a (SHORT-LIVED) glimmer of hope early this morning. The 5am advisory had it slightly EAST of us (a GOOD thing!)....But - ALAS - the 11am track has it ever-so-slightly WEST - A worst case scenario!
It is a ZOO around here...NO GAS anywhere (sure glad I filled up both p-cars and the truck on Wednesday!). And...don't even THINK of going to Lowes/Home Depot or Sam's/WalMart - VERY LONG lines just to get IN to the parking lots!
I'm about as prepped as I can be. Generator run for a half hour yesterday and today (started FIRST pull - God Bless the Coleman company). Ext cords run everywhere thru the house. Everything in the yard tied down/secured. Shark in the garage...951 covered and jammed in between the track car project and the truck (using my old boat bumpers between them...as they're gonna move around some in the winds). Plenty of food/water/COFFEE (coffee pot is always FIRST thing hooked to the gen!) and propane bottles.
We'll do our best to keep all informed throughout.
THANKS for the prayers and well-wishes. We can use ALL the Devine Intervention we can get!

Mark, not that you'll have time to do this now. But if you have room on your breaker, you could wire a 3 wire with a ground into your box and make an outlet for the generator to hookup to. When power goes out, turn off your main disconnect, shut off all breakers in the box except for the one for the generator. Plug the generator into the outlet and turn on the small breakers, like kitchen, living room, etc. That way the generator will power up portions of the house and you won't have to mess with extensions cords all over.
Of course you can mess with that for next storm. Good luck brother.

Speaking of generators, how big of one do you need to run a water well pump? Our lake house has well water and last year we lost power for over 10 days during one of the hurricanes - it sucks living without A/C, but without water it's pretty damn impossible.
I'm thinking the pump might cause a big surge when it kicks on, so the generator might need to be rated pretty high. Any one have any experience here?

Watts = volts X amps. If you use my method above you could install a 50 amp 220 breaker - that's 11,000 watts, but you don't want use em all. Someone will have to help me but I think around 50% is safe. So assuming the 50% is correct, you could put a 5600 watt generator back into the box, which would enable you to turn on the breaker to your well. I think you'll have to check the wattage on the pump, (but I know it's 220V) t see how much juice it pulls.
