Default Key Cut From A Photogragh

After having Porsche attemp to cut a spare set of keys from the vehicles VIN , and checking locally for locksmiths with the proper key cutting machine for 928 keys with no success, I gave Keys4classics.com (Ebay) a try.

Just recieved my key that was cut from a digital photogragh, and worked
flawlessly . Though I pass this on.

Thats very scary. Never let your keys get photographed.

There have been a few threads on these guys before. They do a great job. I keep procrastinating on sending the pics.

If you're really paranoid, have the keys sent to a different address.

You think that is bad, talk to any mechanic that's been around a while and ask how many keys fit multiple cars from similar makes.

Somebody posted just the other day (Anthony Tate I think) that he bought a glovebox used and his key worked in it.

Question

Why go through all that trouble when 928 International can cut keys?

That's what I did. Even though the company is down under, I had them send it to a different address.

Dave: My keys are great, but they don't work on my hatch, do yours? Just wondering if they've figured out why.

If you don't live near 928 Intl, and you have to send them your only key, that's scary. Not because of 928 Intl, but because of FedEx/UPS.

Even if you insure it for $2K to replace all of your locks it's a big pain if they lose it in transit.

Well, I sent photos to the gentleman in Australia (and also got keys back that worked perfectly) because...

I only had one single ignition/lock key. I had tried through the dealership over and over again to have Porsche AG make new keys from the VIN. Porsche failed over and over again.

And I just didn't trust sending my one and only key off in a package - to possibly get lost in transit somewhere.

I have often wondered if I could just have all of my Keys cut to the newer channel slotted key that I have for my 996 C4 and Twin Turbo.

I have to agree with bigs. I also just received back a pair of keys from a digital photo I took and they work perfectly. Since I have had only one key in the past I didn't want to part with it and I thought this was a good alternative.

Someone remind me: Do they make keys that fit the original Porsche keyhead, or the ones with the chap plastic keyhead?

I think they make the aftermarket keys with the keyhead already attached.

I just ordered a blank key and keyhead from DR. He said I needed the keyhead for the key because they don't come with them anymore. Then I told him that I only had the short key. Well, I got a red-headed short key and a keyhead that won't fit it. Since I only have 1 (aftermarket) key and want 3 (the one I have, a nice black one with crest, and any other), I don't mind, but I'd like to know what I need to order to get a short key that fits the lighted (black with crest) keyhead.

BTW, I don't think I have a factory alarm, but there are several horns on the front of my car so I may have one.

If you send him Porsche blanks he can cut those, I think. He has the Silca blanks in stock.
