Default 928 Weight Loss

What is the minimum weight that you coulf get a 928S down to by removing all of the interior and insulation and the AC? The seats would be replaced with racing seats and harnesses? Could 300-400 pounds be removed?

I've removed over 300lbs from my 83, and the car is not what i'd call 'race car spartan'. I'm sure i could easily find another 100+ lbs to pull if i wanted to gut the interior.

One of the guys at another board i post at has an 84(i think) 928 that he said weighs in at 2500lbs with driver. He gutted the interior though, from how he described it, it's a full race car.

I just posted not 5 mins ago the things i removed on another thread, but i'll duplicate the list for ya here:

Entire OEM exhaust(which is very heavy) replaced with a 928Specialists test pipe, single 3" borla XR-1 and single 3" straight pipe.
Yanked AC system(hot weather doesn't bother me much).
Yanked Spare, jack, toolkit(carry a AAA card, much lighter, lol)
Removed Air pump assy
Removed OEM leather power seats and replaced with 19lb contoured cloth driving seats.
42lb factory battery replaced with a 14lb Drycell
Removed front grill
Removed stock clutch and electric fans and replaced with a high output electric pusher.
Removed belly pan
Removed all kinds of extraneous brackets and bolts from undercarriage(about 15lbs worth probably)
Yanked factory amp.
I'm sure i'm forgetting a few things. I've taken off a lot of little stuff in the three years i've owned the car.

"Forgot to tell you the motor is missing"

LOL

Nah, it has a 400+HP small block chevy installed.

From what i understand an aluminum head chevy engine is a full 200lbs lighter than a Porsche V-8.

Lightweight starter.
Rear seatbacks
Headlights to non-movable (large opinion based change)
Front bumper bar to later version or another much lighter version
early cars can remove entire battery box
rear sun visors
devek coilovers are lighter (by a bit)
rear window can be lexan
entire sunroof aparatus

Otherwise, the shell itself can be trimmed when you are REALLY serious, ala Mark Anderson with skin doors, etc.

The interior panels on the 928 are actually very light, so is the AC system. If you really wanted to go light, start with all the insulation, power seats and sunroof stuff.

Be warned, after you remove the sound insulation, the car will no longer be "nice". It will start feeling like a POS. Only remove insulation if it's going to be a track car...

IIRC Jean-Louis Euro track car is just a hair over 2,600 pounds. All glass has been removed (except the windshield). Rear and quarter glass replaced with plastic - rest of the car is gutted.

What does Mark Anderson's car weigh in at?

My 85 is down to 3055 pounds in "street trim"

AC delete - compressor, lines, evaporator and condensor (Never worked when I bought the car)
Converted from Automatic to manual (Yep it's good to be naive)
Factory fan delted to single electric
Smog pump
Light weight gear reduction starter
Light weight alternator (944 variety)
Windshield washer system
Intensive washer system
Diapram valve & Charcoal canister
Cruise control unit
(Race seats) vs Recaro Factory ---not currently in but included in the base number For Track events
(Rear Seat backs ) Bottoms fastened with velcro for removal For Track events
Rear glove box unit.
Carpet (for track events)
Spare tire ,Jack, Tools, Manuals
Factory amps
Dash undertrays
Rear sunvisors
Rear wiper
Rear hatch motor and controller
17 pound dry cell race battery
All unused fuses and relays
Door lock motors relay and actuators
Light exhaust
momo wheel
I drilled 1 1/2 inch holes throughout the heavy sound deadening mat and lost several pounds but the carpet will still hold its shape when in the street configuration.
Sound deadening material from rear floor and deck

With the factory seats and carpet in....not many people catch on to the delets and the car has one it's class at several area car shows.

I'm sure there are some other things which I have forgotten.

I have one of the last supermodel intercooled twin screws on order, when it is in and sorted I should be able to break into a weight to HP ratio of about 6.5 pounds to 1.

Regards,

Ken

"The interior panels on the 928 are actually very light, so is the AC system. If you really wanted to go light, start with all the insulation, power seats and sunroof stuff."

The A/C system in it's entirety(compressor, lines, condensor, evaporator, plus freon charge) weighs about 45-50lbs. That's pretty significant weight savings all by itself.

The OEM power seats weigh about 50lbs each. I replaced them with 19lb ea. racing seats.

On the early cars a good 70lbs can be saved on the exhaust. The OEM exhaust is very heavy, about 90lbs. The single 3" borla setup i installed weighed in at 22lbs.

Imre, i'm using a bosch OEM style alternator. It was the other fella that's using a 944 style alternator.

Those items are all on my 'too-yank' list too, lol.

I also removed the rear window wiper and motor. That's one of the things i knew i was forgetting. I also have a momo wheel, which does save about 2lbs vs the OEM wheel.

The actual sunroof panel is about 55lbs, it's alot heavier than it looks. You would be better deleting all the sunroof stuff before you touch the AC system. Otherwise, wear lots of deodorant...LOL
