I'm finally dropped my tranny. The problem is it won't go into first gear. I appreciate all the tips I found searching in the archives. Wasn't that difficult. I did all the prep work myself and had a friend come to help actually drop it. After removing the top cover, it became very clear, there is a synchro/dogtooth problem. I haven't disassembled the tranny yet, will do later in the week.
One thing I did was follow the shop manuals very closely. However, There is definitely a problem, you should loosen the axles before removing the brake calipers and wheels, otherwise, the tranny just spins while trying to loosen the bolts.
i completely removed the rear end and swiveled it to the side. i thought it might be easier this way. then i took two jacks and slowly lowered it. i was pleasantly suprised there was no binding to the torque tube.

Congratulations! This is my project for next winter. So are you going to rebuild the tranny yourself? (Caution: Self-serving request coming up...) Please take as many pictures as possible.

i'm gonna try and do whatever i need to fix it. i don't think it needs alot since it was last rebuilt around 3 years ago. but for some reason, the first gear is messed up. my camera is a pos so i'm not sure how any of the tranny pics are gonna turn out, but i'll be sure to take some.

jyoon, take as many pics as you can please. Always interesting to see what's inside. Especially Porsche type syncros and gears they are in contact with. We have later versions on hand and it's interesting to compare how large change was done to gears to accomodate Borg Warner syncros.

the one jackstand by the tire is not under load if that's your concern sharkmeister. it's just sitting there because i was using it to hold the torque tube temporarily. tires/wheels and blocks of wood as backup in case the car falls. marked the concentrics. i wasn't sure if i could get the tranny out leaving the suspension in. the manual said to remove it, so i did. hopefully not too bad sticking it all back up there.

took the tranny apart yesterday and today. it wasn't too bad. didn't have a slide hammer,so i had to borrow one. i not taking the diff apart and i think i'm done. the first gear synchro is pulled out so the shift sleave cannot engage the dog teath. i also forgot that i don't have a 10 ton press laying around so i think i'm gonna have to order the parts and take the upper shaft/gears to a tranny shop to press out the collar. here are a few more pics. if anyone would like to see anything in particular, let me know and i can take the pic.
