how'd you get the bars out? after driving the pins with a pinch of course. i in the same process as you i got the tranny out and the diff. just those bars gave me a hard time. is there a easy way to get them out

there are some detent *****/bars that kind of hold them in. I'm not sure if i did it the right way, but i just took a socket extension and wedged them into a groove and lightly tapped them, then they slid toward the rear diff. the center one with the shift coupler i slid toward the front. i think it's gonna be slightly more difficult to reinstall the bars with the detend *****/bars blocking. good luck

Spring loaded arresting bushes and backup light switch should be taken out (except ones in the middle between rods) from gearbox case before shift rods are pushed out. When rods are put back in at correct order it's possible to push middle arresting bushes in to help second rods forward end get by it.

finally got this tranny back in and have first gear! man is it nice. now i'm gonna need some new rear tires, lol. a friend and i took the assembled tranny and installed it and the crossmember last night. it took around 3 hours to get the tranny in and the crossmember secured. then my friend bailed on me and i put on the brakes, reattached the torque tube collar, attached the half shafts, and reinstalled the exhaust and everything else.
before taking the gearset to the tranny guy to press off, i had the new dogtooth, synchro and blocks. however, when he press of the gears, the 1st gear needle bearing was all worn down on one end, so i had to order those. not sure exactly what happened to this trans, but the tranny guy said he thought maybe it was pressed together too tight. also, the new needle bearings i got had steel cages, wheras the old ones were plastic. will post pics of the trashed parts soon.
all in all, i would say this is not that difficult and most anyone mechanically inclined could do it, just a little time consuming and helps to have a friend help.
i was a little suprised at how quickly the prices of the parts added up. it almost seems to be worth getting the rebuilt transmission for 2k if there are any major problems.
here are the parts off the top of my head. prices are approximate:
dogtooth gear $200
1st gear synchro $50
2nd gear synchro $50
Gasket set $85
1st gear band $60
1st gear band stop blocks $45
needge bearings (2) $48
reverse lockout spring $16
tranny man labor to press off gears, reassemble, sand some gears $200
i thought i spent around $800 total.
