Default BBQ NOW or BBQ LATER? FUEL LINE REPALCEMENT HOLIDAY

Hello Everyone,
I am sorry for this alarmist thread topic but I believe it's in our best interest. Just ask Shane. It is true, just as every man would eventually die of prostate cancer, every 928 would eventually burn to the ground if the fuel lines are not replaced. While we spend our time worrying about timing belt failure, thrust bearing falure, etc, there is a much greater concern that most if not virtually all of us seem to overlook. The fuel hoses under your hood are 10 to 28 years old.

Consider how many times your other hoses and your belts have been replaced. Now try to find a reciept for or recall when your fuel lines have been replaced. Chances are they haven't been replaced.

I don't know exactly why we overlook this but it's time we do something about it or else we'll end up charred or even worse, dead.

To help everyone get this done I propose National Fuel Line Replacement Weekend, June 25-26th. By doing so I think that more people will likely do this if there is a "deadline". More people will do this if we do it all together. More people will likely do it as more help will be available. This will allow you time to get groups together around a cook out etc, and have your hoses and tools ready.

-Call one of the Big 3 today and place your order for all of the fuel lines in your car.
-Set up a date ASAP to get this done. 32V cars won't take more than 1-2 hrs. 16V cars may take longer. If you can't do it get with someone that can help you. You may need to have a BBQ at you house to keep from BBQing later.
-Get a fire extinguisher for the service and carry it with you at all times.

Hey Andy

I just happen to be dismantling my fuel tank this weekend to replace it. I've been dripping a quart a day since my return from SITM. I plan to replace every suspect hose i see while im in there. Gonna finally install that test pipe and new center exhaust section too.

Excellent suggestion Andy. This has been one of those things that occasionally gnaws away at your conscience - but never gets done.
Perhaps some suggestions from those that have been there/done that. Dropping the fuel tank and working forward, there are likely four generic families that share common sizes.: the CIS cars, the 16v L-jet, '85-'86 32v, and the S4 - GTS family.
If that is reasonably close, what lengths of what type and size hose is required? Will one diameter do? - etc. Type of fuel hose is critical, for there was a recent post (Kens?) demonstrating how the wrong type was on the road to failure within weeks. So for a start, what is the better/best hose to use?

Also I'll add take extreme caution as you repair you replace these lines. Don't let prevention become a disaster.

How about some braided steel lines with a small pressure gauge mounted on it for the CIS motors. We have about 75 psi in them and it would be nice to look at while tuning.

How about a kit guys!

Carl?

Anyone? The metric to AN fittings give me a pounding head ache. I wish it were simple.

Was the one that let go #25 in this picture? This is from an 87 not an 86...i think they are the same.

(edit)I just went out and took a shot of mine for a better idea. Assuming this was the hose, you can see it is a pretty short run but the piece of rubber hose in question serves as a "flexible link" between the solid metal line on the inside of the engine bay to the rocking/moving motor. Its a pressure line, sits for all practical purposes above the passenger side header. The line itself is a bit of a PITA to replace as the metal tubing section of it snakes up over the passenger side cam cover, down under the T-stat housing and up to the front damper.
Again, this is on an 87's4.
HTH.

What id like to see...
You call your favorite vendor and say.....
"I need part number "928-911-911... engine bay fuel line replacement kit please for an 19XX"
Thats the ticket IMHO. It could be a universal number used by each vendor providing the same hoses. Looking each hose up in PET or trying to describe it over the phone is a PITA, especially form the drawings they give.

Tony -

I like the idea of the kit - 19xx-FLK (fuel line kit).

Hello all, I was at Shane's place today helping him clean up the car that caught fire and I believe that it was hose # 25 in Tony's picture that had burst on Shane's car. I have checked that hose on my 87 and it is very hard and has a small crack in it by the last hose barb on the left side. I will be replacing all of the fuel lines immediately on my car. Please check and replace your fuel lines.

I will be the sacrificial dummy... how many fuel lines are there and how much would replacing them cost?
