I purchased one and had a chance to look it over quickly last night. It seemed well put together and contained a lot of information. Project 928 was copied in its entirety, as were some of Jim Moorehouse's works. 928 Motorsports was well represented and there were six or seven video clips. As professional as this DVD was, it was crudely labeled and outwardly appeared homemade. It didn't seem to me as if the seller was worried about sales that would bring into question copyright infringement.

So - obvious question to Jim Morehouse - is this a legal use of your material?

I realize that some of the content Jim put together is likley technically Porsche copyrighted - but since you can't buy most of it from Porsche at any price anymore its practically not very likely Porsche would persue this - I assume same is true of Project 928 (though they are bringing great prices used).

What say you Jim?

Also suggests it has the complete FWM included... how useful is this ? (quality, searchability) this one may be a more likley a target for copyright actions given its (sometimes anyway) still available?

Angry It should be illegal to post this type of Copyright infringment on Rennlist!!!

Last week it was copying the Al Hobert poster (which clearly has Porsche Cars North America and the owner of the photo listed on the bottom of the print) and now posts for rip off copies of Project 928. Open discussions on the list about making obviously illegal purchases of the ripoff prints.

Allowing posts such as this on the Rennlist is simply WRONG!

"which clearly has Porsche Cars North America and the owner of the photo listed on the bottom of the print"

My Hobert speed record poster does not have any copyright info on it.

Like my originally mint in boxed copy of Project 928, I have an original mounted and framed copy of the Al Hobert Poster and along the bottom of it in at least half inch tall font is the following print ownership info-

Porsche Cars North America Inc., 200 South Virginia Street Reno, NV 89501 Printed in U.S.A. 1987 Design: Strenger, Photography: Hal Crocker

Alan,
Although I haven't seen the dvd (I'd like to), it looks like he has taken the 3 cd set of "Technical Publications" and the FWSM I did and put them on the DVD. I obviously can't do anything about that since all of this stuff is copyrighted. Apparently Porsche's attorneys in the UK are much more lacksadaisical (sp) than those here because most US ebay listings for copyrighted material get pulled at Porsche's "request". Oh well. Maybe I should email him to let him know I found a few more training manuals for the tech publications

If he's smart he used my version of the FWSM

Now how did you know that? Don't tell me you're now set up to sell thru the UK? Damn. I did want to see what was on the dvd and how the project 928 scans came out. Doublenutz, can't tell you how ashamed I am at having disappointed you

It OK Jim we will expect to see at the St Porsche confessional tomorrow morning. You may get off easily with saying ten or so Hail Ferry's and a contribution to the 928 box.

$199 doesn't seem like an unreasonable price for a complete 9 volume updated set. From what I understand, Porsche has sold the rights to the manuals so it's up to the company that now owns the rights to produce them.

How often has a Porsche rep posted on a Rennlist thread to add to the discussion or find out the answers to questions that frankly, only Porsche could answer definitively? Why didn't Porsche put together a DVD for the 928 fans? Why haven't they been more forthcoming in licensing others to provide us with needed information?
Porsche doesn't support the 928 community, and has never, to my knowledge, much supported the 928 community. It isn't profitable for them.
Defending their rights to their information (all the old tech manuals, WSM's etc.), when they have elected to pursue other, more profitable ventures, is hard to justify on anything but a legal basis. It's hard to argue the moral high ground on this one. For Porsche, it's all about money and profit; it's their obligation to their shareholders. To Porsche, the 928 is an orphan. To many Porsche-o-philes, it's a bastard. So we're on our own. We'd better stick together.
Jim, and everyone else sharing information on the Forum, aren't trying to get rich at the expense of others. If someone chooses to make information available for the benefit of all of us (profit not withstanding), it seems like a win-win. Remember, Porsche had the right of first refusal, and passed. BTW, I don't think Porsche holds the copyright on Project 928.

Does that name Strenger ring a bell to any? (Designer of the Al Holbert 928 speed record poster, as well as many other posters and graphic designs for Porsche).
