Installed the new radiator and fans today. The only problem was the a/c and auto transmission lines made for a tight fit for the fans. I used a Hayden adjustable thermostatic control set up for twin fans. It has a 50 amp relay and a probe that fits into the radiator. Fans on temperature is adjustable between 160-210 degrees and also has a wire to run to the a/c compressor. It was Hayden # 3647 and $34.99 at O'Reillys. Granted it was only in the 80's today, but running the 79 hard then turning on the a/c and stop and go driving and long periods at red lights, the temp gauge never went passed the 1st white line. An impressive improvement over the fan/clutch set up. The quality of the radiator and fan/mount is excellent. Well worth the cash outlay.

If you are running your car at below factory spec temperatures you will damage your car. Cooler than spec is NOT better, it's outside design parameters.

Yes Sir, you are correct. According to the instructions (I actually read them LOL), you turn it up to open at 210 degrees, let the vehicle run until the thermostat opens, (mine is 75 C) and turn it down till the fans turn off, then back up just enough to turn them on. This is supposed to get your fans on about the time your thermostat opens. It has been running above the 2nd line in heavy stop and go traffic with the a/c on. That makes me nervous, my other engine ran considerably cooler.

I don't know that you would damage your motor running below factort specs but I agree that Porsche had a reason for running the thermostats, temperatures they do.

I just put same fan shroud in my 89. It provides gobs more room in front of the engine. Clear access to the accsessory belts, tensioner. The fans are quiet but effective. Pictures tomorrow.

I would agree as to quiet while in the drivers seat, but I definately hear them standing in the front of the car with the engine running and the hood closed.

Yeah, it's called 'emmisions certification'.

Seriously though, a hot motor actually makes more power...but at the cost of an increased possiblity of detonation.

That's why most Stage II race chips come with a 160 deg. thermostat to compensate for the increased ignition advances that the chips allow.

Doug Hillary has contributed quite a bit to the forum regarding oiling. Do a search on his name, there are tons of great posts that will give you some background on that statement and the risks of running with oil below it's design temp. The "Oil Condition Report" posts are especially interesting IMHO.

Absolutely correct.

I've tried all sorts of little ge-gaws in the past from lower temp thermostats, lower temp fan switches, etc........all of them made the car run worse, lose power, or take longer to come up to regular operating temp. My GT absolutely hates having a coolant temp below 190, around that and above it runs perfectly and is very strong with no ping at all.....even in 100 degree weather and A/C on.

If you change one part of the equation of engine temp others need to be changed along with it to make any sort of a positive difference. Yes, a cooler running engine with engine management changes can run stronger, but just lowering the coolant temp running through the engine may not be a good thing for it,......maybe just for your head though. This holds true especially for the later year 928s.

Fact is the stock cooling system (whether older clutch and Aux fan, or dual S4 type fans) works very nice and has tons of extra capacity when operating correctly and up to factory spec.

Finding a better solution is always a good thing if the "solution" is not just a band-aid for the total system being in poor condition or having other problems.

Just to complete the circle, what kind of damage results from running too cool (assuming no other mods) and what exactly constitutes "too cool"?

My 87 has been running hotter....at the top white line....since new W/P and thermostat were installed. Wondering if the shop put the wrong temp thermostat in....what temp should the thermostat open at?
