Default REAL WORLD Goldmember TT Performance Figures

1980 3-Spd Automatic 4.5 liter, street tires (245s out back) full vehicle weight:

Baseline normally aspirated (i.e. before I touched it):
0-60 mph: 8.5 sec
1/4 mile: 16.8 @ 89.4 MPH

Factory Specs:
0-60 mph: 8.5 sec
1/4 mile: 16 seconds

After installation of turbos running 10 lbs of boost, intercooled...run this evening:
0-60: 5.2 seconds
1/4 mile: 13.6 @ 108 MPH...one shot deal with me lifting off between shifts to not abuse the driveline...it will do better, perhaps 13.3?

All measurements made with G-tech. The car now carries nearly 20 more mph in the 1/4 mile distance which is substantial. With more tuning this car will turn better numbers. With the 5 speed this setup might produce a sub 13 second car, but I guess I will have to build it to find out. The Callaway is getting a set of K-26s as soon as I find the time to make the manifolds and install them. Goldmember is wearing smaller K-24s.

As before, no hot cams or head work, just a force fed 4.5 liter with forged pistons. You can, in fact, turn a sow's ear into a silk purse! This car is one nice sleeper.

A 13.6 by a 3.2 sec gain in 1/4th mi is huge. That would be equal to a 5 speed 86 running a 11.0 sec 1/4th mi.

Thanks...I voiced my opinion on CS vs turbo again and others are once again upset with me. Oh well. She will do more, I'm sure of it....I should have bought a 5-speed!

Once I get the Callaway converted over to my system...then we can see what a 5-speed car will do with the classic turbocharger system that is perfectly matched to the engine.

Then I need to find a nice, warm, cozy home for the Goldmember and move into S4 territory!

You need to find a nice 5-Speed s4 to turbocharge, if you really want to impress people with dyno numbers...

Aren't you the guy who did a custom turbo on a Shark recently? I thought it was for sale at some point. Was a dyno run ever posted from it?

Do you have any dyno runs from this callaway system that you could post?

I hear lots from a few people about turbocharging 928's, and that it is the way to go and it is better than SC'ing but I have yet to see a dyno run.

Thanks

Yes, BUT the 86 will have to be somewhere around 700+hp to do that and with a city bus differential.

John, you made me grab the G-Force meter this morning. Hadn't used it in a LONG time.

This is you:
1980 3-Spd Automatic 4.5 liter, street tires (245s out back) full vehicle weight:
This is me: 1979 5-spd stick, 4.5 Liter, street tires, (245s out back), full vehicle weight - spare tire, jack, Porsche accesory air compressor, THE WORKS.

This was you:
1/4 mile: 13.6 @ 108 MPH...one shot deal with me lifting off between shifts to not abuse the driveline...it will do better, perhaps 13.3?
This is what I got: 1/4 mile: 13.93 @ 107.2 on first run, 13.98 @ 109.5 on the second run. I'm running 9 pounds of boost in our garden-variety Stage 2 kit.

Pretty similar!

Keep in mind that we are looking at automatic vs a 5 speed in the comparison. Pretty similar, but I would take the mental leap based on this data, that the turbo is a bit stronger.

Carl,

Nice results. I hope that you sell hundreds and hundreds of kits.

John,

Nice results. It would be great if you would continue to tune and then run on a dyno when it is dialed in.

It would be great if we could get John's turbo in a 5 speed and have a friendly head to head challenge on dyno and 1/4 mile runs. Without a doubt, both setups will deliver impressive results. I would guess that we would have two winners: 1) a leader in performance and a 2) price leader.

Kuhn
Great results.....those are impressive times with the 3 speed, especially with lift shifts.....but the tranny should be strong enough to take full throttle shifts....the old 3 speeds are just as strong, if not more than the 4 speeds. So in order to get times like that you are probably 350-75 whp, since the older models are lighter...have you weighed the car as tested?

Carl,
Thanks for posting the results. You are the only person with a centrifugal that has ever publicly posted timed acceleration results.

However, the results are not similar at all.

Factory spec for a 79 5 speed is 15.5 sec. Carl did a 13.93 for an improvement of 1.57 sec.

Factory spec for an '80 3 speed auto is 16.0 sec. John did a 13.6 for an improvement of 2.4 sec.

In general it takes about 100hp for a 1 sec improvement in the 1/4th mi.

If we look at the difference between the resulting improvements, .83 sec, then we see that the turbo car would perform/drive as though it has 80 more HP than a centrifigual car with the same transmission.

Awesome John! Your car would be insanely fast 0-60 with that 5-speed!

Big mistake on the A/T on my part...I should have never bought that car and sourced a 5-speed instead....then we'd be looking a 12 second car for sure. We all know the G-tech measures high on MPH as compared to the track, but the time is spot on. It will also be an issue to sell when the time comes. I think that the car would run 0.5 seconds faster with a stick, or maybe even more. I don't think the 3-spd AT is all that great of a trans at all next to a 5-spd...but the early 5-spds were not gems either.

Yes, Carl, THANK YOU for posting some results. Now I would like to see some results from Tim's setup so we can have good numbers for all setups. Until that day comes Andy K is the street/strip leader! I was out late last night with the GM...just one pass, not re-do or strategy, just mash it and go.

What stage kit am I running anyway? Stage ? Perhaps a cheaper version is in order? Rear mounted Garrett anybody?
